Hey guys,

I have a 1gb and I did put the timing belt gear on. However when I went to try to put the fluid damper on - I've noticed that I can't squeeze it between the motor and body frame like the OEM Damper. Before doing so, it looks like I would have to remove the driver side motor mount to lower it. Well - I've done that and still doesn't buy me enough room. Just curious to see what else I can do before I do something else if I'm missing something much easier.

Thanks in advanced!

Are you trying to get the motor and trans in from the top? If personally put them in from the bottom, but since you're already going from the top, you may need a load leveler to shoe-horn it in. I do believe the fluidamper is thicker than OEM tho.

Sorry - I completely have left out the most important information. The motor is already in the car. I didn't take the motor out because I didn't think I'd run into this hurdle. Yes the ATI Damper is thicker than OEM and I didn't take that into consideration. >_<

Sorry, I totally misread ATI damper.

I have not tried to install an ATI with the engine in the car, but I would imagine you'd have to do it from underneath. I don't know how much clearance you will have to get it over the crankshaft though, I can't see there being a huge issue with it, even with the integrated timing gear.

Aw dangit.

So the Integrated timing gear it does stick out way further than the stock timing gear. No physical way for it to slide between the timing gear and the actually body. The fluid damper will fit once it’s on the gear of course.

What I’m trying to figure out is do I really have to remove the engine to install this damper? Or can I one how lower the engine more than removing thens driver side motor mount ?

cant speak from experience on this one but with just one mount removed the engine is dropping and rotating. You are bringing the top of the pulley outwards toward the strut tower/body. Could you remove more of the mounts (with engine hanging from hoist) and lower it further without rotating? if you cant lower it enough to sneak it in, just lift it out while you've got it hooked up and get it done.

good luck, please post whatever you end up doing. Thanks

But NASCAR uses ATI...:)
NASCAR isn't always right, and I don't recall seeing a DSM in NASCAR :thumb:
I know ATI is quality still, but the integrated timing gear for us makes it a bit more of a headache.

THANK YOU EVERYONE.

So to put a nail in the coffin- it's safe the say that you can absolutely mount the ATI Super Damper with the motor still in the car. You do have to lower the motor (a good bit) by disconnecting the driver-side and front-side engine mounts. I didn't use a hoist nor I saw a reason to since when I typically disconnect the driver side all I do is use a jack-stand and plywood/2x4 under the oil pan. Once I lowered it enough to slide the damper onto the integrated part, I quickly tightened the damper to spec and put reconnected the motor mounts.

I'm not sure if ATI is going to be better than a Fluiddamper only because I have not used the other brand. NOW what I can say is after doing this install, I would absolutely have rather gone with the Fluid. Strictly because I feel like I could have done this much easier / faster. The only thing about the ATI is that I'll have to get the tools to remove it when ever I need to pull it to service whatever I need to.

Pretty sure with the ati you just have to remove the big 7/8 crank bolt. bolt the outer to the hub, then put the big crank bolt back in.

From what I just experienced it was much easier to just put the integrated part on first (press on) then the damper itself. Again this is with motor in car.

That’s what I’m saying to do. Install the timing gear, then remove the crank bolt so the outer ring can fit between the crankshaft and inner frame rail. Bolt it on, replace the big bolt and you’re done.
