A lot of work being done to the talon lately. Once I fix something, I realize something else needs to be improved upon/fixed. I ordered new Portferfield brake pads all around and some Baer rotors. I also installed a new driver's side rear axle and a new brake booster.

I love this build, I am pretty much where you were on step 1. I just purchased a 1g after not having a DSM for the past 10 years. Everything is so much different now. Not real sure if I made a good purchase but plowing ahead.

What shops in Houston are you using? I am also in Houston. I maybe shopping for a rebuild later this week.

I'm glad you're enjoying the thread. I love updating my build journal. There isn't a single shop in Houston that works on DSMs anymore. Collins Automotive used to but I've heard they have completely stopped. Smiley Automotive in Kyle, TX might be your closest shop. I'm always happy to help with stiff if you have questions or need parts. Where are you located?

I live in the Sugarland area but keeping my car in the Memorial area until I get it finished. I'm working on body work and general maintenance right now. I'm sure I will have a ton of questions pretty soon. Right now I am just trying to educate myself so I can at least ask the right questions. Hoping to have mine running this week, fingers crossed.

Alright, lots of work being done on the talon as usual. A couple months ago I started noticing a rubbing sound coming from the timing belt area. Long story short, I started worrying that my oil pump was going out because everything that's been installed on this car by someone other than me has been shit. That's saying a lot because I'm not even a great mechanic. Anyways, I was hoping I would take the oil pump off and see straight-cut gears and see everything in great condition. Of course, I opened up the pump to see god damn helical gears with a journal cut through the middle of the bearing surface. I can never catch a break on this car. I'm never pleasantly surprised, but whatever. New oil pump, gears, pulleys and oil pan.

What most likely caused the rubbing was the new Fluidampr pulley rubbing on the timing belt cover. I clearanced it but it must not have been enough. I installed some ARP crank pulley bolts while I was in there and just made the most of it. Also, got me a new air compressor and ditched my old 6 gallon compressor. Cat seems to have passed away while waiting for the car to run again.

Are the straight-cut gears stock on 1g 7-bolt engines?
On the 1g 6-bolts I think helical gears were stock, weren't they?
Anyway, how do you get the straight gears?

Pretty sure early 6 bolts we're straight cut, not sure on 1g 7 bolts. You can order the straight gears from JNZ and STM I believe.

Derpy cat, I wanna pet it, haha.

1g 7 bolt Mitsubishi oil pump gears are helical. 6 bolt have straight cut gears. but most of after market pumps come with helical gears even for 6 bolt, such as ACL oil pump.

As far as I know, the straight gears came only with the 90 oil pumps. Every other year of dsm had helical gears. I believe I got mine from extremepsi or JNZ.

My bad. That's correct I guess. The catalog that I use is Japanese version and there are some differences between the States and Japan. Like there is no 1gb in Japan, All 1g is 1ga until '94. That makes me confused sometimes.

Well, we all know that if it's the Japanese version then it must be better :)

I bought some Royal Purple ICE to help with corrosion in the coolant system. I basically run 100% distilled water which can cause rusting so I thought it might be good to add some anti-corrosion tot he mix. I also bought a new oil pressure sending unit for my POS Jegs gauge. It literally never worked from day 1 and left me scratching my head as to why didn't work for months. I put the new sender in and it worked immediately. I'm just happy to have the oil pressure gauge working for once. I also relocated the sender to the spot where my fluid reservoir used to be. It's pretty secure now.

if you already have just water in the system i would flush it out before adding the royal purple because it will already picked up contaminants thru galvanic action ..starts eating ur engine and rad from the inside ...and coating surfaces making heat transfer less efficient ...

OK, thanks. I'll look into that.

I did a complete rebuild on the 90 shifter I'm using. Some of the bushing were basically non-existent causing the shifter lever hit the shifter base bolts. For the longest time I thought it was a notchy transmission. I was relieved to find out it was a simple bushings

I finally got around to installing my cold-air intake. I bought it off a guy on the ecmlink forums last year. I wound up using a 5" hole saw with an air ratchet. It worked perfectly. It has plenty of clearance from the tire, and I'm considering installing the splash shield there to inhibit debris from getting into the filter. I'll probably wind up lining the hole with some rubber grommet to protect the intake piping.
