What’s up guys, so I’m gonna vent a little frustration here on this piece. Today I decided to inspect my filter element/replace if need be for the sake of my precious top shelf turbo, only to find it was a mission impossible task. This thing is rediculous trying to remove, I called fp and they recommended using a wood screw to remove the filter, which I tried and tried but failed. Then moved on to the drill bit, bolt extractor etc, and this thing was still laughing at me LOL. So now my car is down for a week as I wait on a new $70 restrictor:rocks: Has anyone else struggled with this pos? I’m seriously considering ditching this thing and just running a .030 restrictor with no filter:dsm:

That’s weird, maybe mine got seized in there some how, I’m curious tho would it be so bad to restrict the flo without the filter? I would think with quality oil, valvoline vr1, it would be fine. I mean I’m sure the turbo has a better chance with “oil contaminates” than it would with a clogged $2.50 filter

Personally I think an inline filter for the turbo isn't necessary, in fact it's a big liability (look at certain Subarus).
I get that FP wants to have alot of warranty protection, but if anything is getting to the turbo that will damage it, that filter will clog in no time, and you've got much bigger problems to worry about than the turbo or it's bearings.

If you have a solid motor, good filters and quality oil with steady pressure, a restrictor is all you should need. Anything getting past the oil filter or starting past it, means you're already effed.

Unless that’s a ball bearing turbo a .030” restrictor will kill it.

I fed all my fp turbos unrestricted from the filter housing, and all my ball bearing turbos from the same spot with an fp filter/restrictor.

Some fp filters aren’t restrictors, just filters.

Get a small self tapping screw and screw it into the filter basket, it’ll pull right out.

Hey Donnie, my turbo is the dsm82, bolt on 35r bb, I’m feeding it from the head as they recommended, I fed my prior turbo, the fp red unrestricted from the ofh with no issues. So far this turbo seems happy on this setup with a universal 10an drain, which I wouldn’t run on any journal bearing turbo due to its small id, but I agree with thunderchild that the filter isn’t necessary on a healthy motor with quality oil, and regular changes. I mean it’s a double edged sword, if theirs contaminants in the oil that’s going to hurt the center cartridge, what difference does it make if the turbo dies anyways from a clogged filter, your damned if you do and damned if you don’t. I would rather just change my oil often than constantly worry about a filter clogging. And I tried a wood screw witch had a great bite on the filter but still wouldn’t back it out, maybe I just got a stubborn filter

I’ve been looking for that turbo in the FP housing forever! Let me know if you want the DSM76 for better spool and we can work something out

I agree with being able to remove the filter element but keeping the restrictor for the BB turbo. The only thing I do see is if it were to catch a few small debris but was still able to supply the BB with enough oil, you may have saved the turbo.

Those filters kept me from buying a new turbo. If you lose an engine without a filter, you lost a turbo too, especially ball bearing. The ball bearing chra’s Are tough as nails, but any contamination and they’re done.

The dsm82 was probably the best street turbo I’ve ever ran. But for comparisons sake my 3586 in a .82 housing and full t3 setup made almost 200 more horsepower.

Maybe I’ll just stick with the filters then, and this is by far my favorite turbo so far:hellyeah: At 34 psi it’s REALLY fun on the street, it’s always been my dream turbo:thumb: Thank you guys for the responses I really appreciate it:dsm:

It sounds like taking it out will ruin it in any event, so you might as well plan on having a replacement nearby, this might have been planned by FP for revenue generation on this item.

I’ve changed the filter in mine numerous times without issue. It’s the exact same procedure (and part) as taking fuel filter baskets out of injectors.

I think the whole thing is funny, I just wanted to inspect it, I’m sure it was fine, but then i was past the point of no return LOL. Looks like others have struggled with it as well, but I’d love to continue running the restrictor with the filter as intended. Just want to make the removal as easy as possible
