This may be a silly question but...
I recently purchased some Feal's for my 2g and was attempting to try and set the ride height on the fronts in preparation for installing them. While trying to unlock the lower ring that controls the ride height i ended up twisting the lower threaded portion of the coilover on one of them. Originally I was worried I had accidentally moved the spring preload collar but I don't think that is the case. The preload collars are not quite even though. So my question is two fold. Would the preload collars be slightly different to account for a small variance in the springs or did I accidentally change the preload? And two would spinning the threaded portion on the shock have changed anything?
Having toyed with it a little bit the threaded portion and the preload collar seem to move together so I really don't think that the preload was changed at all.
The red arrow refers to the motion of the threaded portion on the shock and the green circle refers to the preload collar.

You want to use the spring perch as the ride height adjustment anyway as its actually the correct way to set height but you have to do a longer setup and checking on the car,

The spring perch if keeping them where they are can just be set from the upper spring retsiner and match them across the board to keep preload equal. They do the adjustment from there but doing it this way you loose alot of rebound travel and can jack the wheel but if its jsut a daily then thats fine and would not worry so much on that

So ultimately you are asking if the threaded portion spins does it mess with preload. That should be a no unless you loosen the 2 preload nuts and move the top nut closest to the spring up or down the threaded portion. The threaded portion is designed to spin when the very bottom nut is broken lose from the bottom of the shock assembly on the threaded portion so you can adjust it on the car. When the bottom nut is broken lose you then take the nut wrenches provided and depending on if you want to raise or lower the car and turn the preload nuts. They work on the same principle of removing or tightening a stud with 2 nuts tightened together on the stud. When you adjust the ride height you basically want to always turn the nuts for the preload into each other otherwise you break them loose and can mess with the preload.

Ok thanks for the replies. I was fairly certain it wasn't something I needed to worry about, but I just wanted to be sure. And yes it's not my daily, but right now there are no plans on racing it so I'm just wanting some better handling and looks by replacing the 20 years shocks and springs.

Will do! I'm pretty excited to get them on and I'll be doing some other stuff like balljoints and tie rods so it should all be a lot firmer.

I will as soon as soon as soon as I get my exhaust finished! Literally trying to get the stock o2 housing off right now. Haven't really had a chance to drive the car with them cause I went straight into getting the exhaust on. And I've been having some issues there. I'm super excited to drive it once it's all down though.
