The stud from my exhaust manifold to head got looser and looser as i tightened the nut to bolt on my exhaust manifold to head. It soon came off with aluminum in between the threads ? I can still insert stud to a certian point but it feels if i tighten again the same problem will occur or worse. Is my engine toast ? I put a lot of time and money into getting my only car back running.

the head can be repaired with a helicoil ..it involves drilling out the hole ...rethreading with the tap from the helical kit and screwing in the helicoil to complete the repair ...you may have to take the manifold off...to answer ur question the engine is still good !!

you can fix it a bunch of different ways.
you could
-- helicoil it
-- retap it for a larger bolt
-- loctite thread repair epoxy

i have even filled the stripped hole with jb weld and sprayed the bolt with this shit and once it sets up its solid and can be unbolted easily

I've use the heli-coils in the head on several different applications and haven't had any issues. Those inserts look awesome though, I may have to try those next time.

Buy a Time Sert kit on amazon , they are about 100 bucks. You can also get a Big Sert kit if you fail at the Time Sert. I suggest you also get a drill and tap guide to make sure your going in straight. They are very cheap and fool proof. A little quick tip, when your drilling the head measure the amount of aluminum you plan to drill into and wrap some tape around the drill bit so you know when you need to stop. I can’t count how many I’ve repaired and they are all still in working order .

Definitely second the tape for depth indicator.
I have always used helicoils, even have one of the stud holes repaired with one myself many years ago and is still as strong today as it was then. Did it freehand, just have to be careful the hole you drill is as straight as you can possibly make it. Try to use a lightweight drill so it doesnt sag but when you start chomping aluminum it will kick. Maybe do a test run on something else first to get a feel for it?

Thank you all very much yall are awesome. I decided to go heli coil, if It is super temporary with heli coils I will go with another option. O boy ive been trying to get this dsm running but just problems after problems after I decided to do the hg replacement myself.

Agreed, I've had a helicoil stud in for 6 years or so and has been through a couple manifold removals. I just recently pulled the stud out to check the threads and condition, and it looks just as though I had just installed it. I did use the opportunity to remove some of the old shavings from the tap.. oops

Don't get me wrong, I pucker a little every time I tighten that one, but it always comes back asking for more torque. I just don't give it any more than it needs.
