Hello everyone I’ve recently got the itch to get back into the eclipse game after about an 8 year hiatus. I got fed up with car issues and just wanted something reliable which led me to get out of the scene. I have a lot more bills then I did before and so this will be more of a slow burn instead of having lots of expendable cash and time (have a kid now)
Previously I have owned a 95 gst and my baby was a decked out 98 eclipse gs (420a) with an aftermarket turbonetics t3/t4 set up and tons of other things I’m sure I’ve forgotten over the years. I’ve always wanted a 1g and I’m in the process of acquiring one as I write this. The seller has told me there is a rattle when the throttle is let off and that’s about the only issue I’ve heard about since then. What kind of red flags should I be looking for when I finally get to test drive this. It’s a 92 eclipse with a 1.8 4g67 iirc? I know the power is underwhelming but I figure this will put a leash on me from going crazy and trying to build power and sink too much money into this car. I figure this will afford me the opportunity to work on the car and do little things here and there without too much risk. Also any little upgrades or tips to get me started would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to picking up the car and hopefully getting back into the scene. Thanks for reading this massive run on sentence gents.

Whoa, 1.8L 1gs still exist? Suspension issues would be what I'd look for on a car that old. Unless it's had work, all the bushings and balljoints will likely be shot.

If the rattle is not internal to the motor, maybe the motor mounts are bad and causing something to rub when it moves around?

Lol yeah I never even knew these engines existed when I was way into tuner culture LOL, to make a long story short the car has 155k miles on it and the dude wanted 1200 for the car. As I’m shopping around I’m seeing a lot of cheap eclipses 2gs in particular for that price some gsts even. So I keep debating back and forth, I’m a little hesitant because I blew my 95gst motor at 130k.

Depending on what you want the car to do, I'd try to narrow down that rattle first thing, then address other wear items like suspension as @shinzon said.
I'd personally love to have a 1.8 4g37 car as they're great on gas and non-interference, they're just getting harder to find in worthwhile shape.

For the 2gs my only worry is a neglected 420a engine, but otherwise they can be good if it's been well maintained. A GST/GSX would be more fun, but maybe not as practical, though it's hard to beat a well done 4g63 for reliability and fun factor.

I still say get a 1g if you can find it.

What would a 4g67 do with a DOHC hyundai head from an early 90s car like Jaffro's got?

Not sure I understand your question. Are you asking about power capabilities?

It'd be less than a 4g63 due to the 81.5mm bore diameter, which is going to shroud the valves pretty bad and limit flow potential some, as well as the lower displacement.
Would be better than a 4g37, because pretty much anything was as far as power production.

If going through the trouble of swapping to a Sirius engine from the 4g37, might as well do a 4g63/64 instead of a 4g67.

Welcome back! My first car was a 91 red GST. Man it was fun until I blew it up about three times. Something about the 1gs that just get me, maybe it’s the pop up headlights or the fact I grew up in one as a kid. Either way they are great vehicles.

Assuming the rattling isn’t coming from the engine itself you could check the exhaust and mounts for potential causes. Something as simple as a loose heat shield or worn out engine mount could cause a ton of rattling.

Other potential issues I’d watch out for is the fact that these cars are getting close to 30years old. They already had a bad rap for neglectful owners back when it was 5/6 years much less 25/30. Suspension pieces, hoses/lines for both coolant/fuel/oil could potentially need to be replaced. Just give it a decent check over and take notes of things that could potentially be of concern.

Lastly I’d first figure out what your goal for a vehicle is period. Daily, back road drivers, track queen etc. Determining this could drastically dictate which model to go with along with what your budget within that said model will get it you.

Best of luck!

Yeah at the moment it was going to be daily driver and it might still be, but I’m also tempted to keep saving and go for my holy grail 1g gsx. And from what you guys have told me and what I read the 1.8 seems reliable and will allow me to save mileage on my every day vehicle.

Ok so sorry for the late reply to this thread but I pulled the trigger and picked up the 92 eclipse 1.8. I was blown away with how great this car actually drove! The engine is strong (mechanically wise) and I was kind of shocked at the acceleration. Clutch and tranny are super smooth as well. The rattling is only a n exhaust bracket that was loose and just have it zip tied for now. What I’m really looking for and pointed in the right direction are potential places to find either old new stock or pieces that I can still buy for this. Also been searching locally on pick a part websites craigslists ebays etc. I need to pick up some visors, a windshield wiper reservoir and definitely needs some suspension help. There’s no power steering pump reservoir or steering rack so that is something I may do in the future or may not. What I’m curious about is my car has 4 lug rims and from what I’ve researched all eclipses from like 89 on seem to be 5 lug like my old gst and gs. Is there a specific offset I should be looking for so I can either get off these stock rims because they are hideous. Again also weighing options to possibly convert to a 5 lug setup but I don’t want to pour tons of money into this as well. Appreciate the time and future comments if anyone actually gets through all this.
