So this will be my first build thread that I have ever done but figured I would start one with this car just for fun. So I will be updating it as I am working on it and will take plenty of pictures. I want to keep it somewhat simple for now. I plan on doing some open track days with it as well as auto x. So it will probably be a 16g build with a motor that can hold way more for if I ever decide to go big with it. I miss the good ole 16g days anyways. I have the 2g for when I want to go fast.

So back in December I lost a black 1G in a break up (the one on my list of vehicles) that as far as I am concerned was a 50/50 split of a car. And the title is in both of our names. But we wont get into that right now. It was a 3 year project that just needed repainted and some coilovers and I would have considered it completed. I was pretty attached to the car to be honest so that was a tough loss along with the relationship. But life goes on. The motor I just built along with many other parts on the car are mine and I may make some moves to get them back. I have not decided yet. But enough of that story.

So after losing the car in December of last year I decided it was time for my post break up purchase to keep me busy. A friend of a friend was getting ready to move and needed to get rid of a 1g GSX roller he had sitting in his yard. My friend kept pushing me to go look at it and buy it so we could start up another project. For about 4 months I avoided looking at the car because I knew once I saw it in person, it was coming home with me. And it sure did. Hence earning the title, The Replacement.

These were some pictures that I took the first night I went to go look at.

I was never a huge fan of the blue on the 1G but with how clean the shell was I could not pass it up. I also have a soft spot for DSM's on their way to the scrap yard. So I figured I would just learn to love it. It was hard to see at night, but the car was repainted and whoever did it shot it thin and there are spots that need some more clear. Nothing a re-paint wont fix. Anyway I made the deal to buy the car (which I bought for practically nothing) and arranged to pick it up.

So I went back a week or so later and with the help of some friends and picked it up. Ohio weather decided to just screw us royally considering it was 60 and sunny the day before and after this. But on this day, it was like 20 and snowing. We had to pull it out of the yard as it was sunk in pretty good. So what better to use than a 1g AWD Laser.

We loaded it up on to the trailer and brought it on home.

So fast forward to the next day, the weather was nice enough to wash the car. Imagine that. It cleaned up decent but the paint was definitely not perfect. I will definitely be refinishing it. Which I have decided will be the first thing that I am going to do is fix the body.

So this brings me up to speed on everything so far. I may start to sanding it down this weekend as the weather is supposed to be pretty nice. I will keep updating with pictures and info as I start tearing into it more.

Well we made some progress on tearing the car down to get it ready for paint. We started doing some sanding in the engine bay and got the interior out. There are a few spots of slight surface rust in the tub so we'll be spraying that as well. There is a hole that will need patched up right by the throttle pedal as well. The next challenge will be finding which holes I do and don't need on the firewall and everywhere else in the engine bay so the rest can be filled.

We also found a nice little rats nest in the cowl.

Probably going to do some more sanding tonight and might start taking the front suspension apart.

Congrats on embarking on this project. You sound quite confident about the whole thing. I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed by the work that mine needs, but at least I have already driven it across the country. Then two tires went flat, the p/s fluid all leaked out, and I started looking into all the things it needs. Oh boy. Had to drain the fuel tank because the drain plug was seeping. There’s some rust in there....I could go on, but back to yours.
I hope you consider keeping the color, but the way you’ve got it stripped, maybe switching? Keep up the posts, they help me.

As of right now it will be going back to the factory blue that it once was. The blue that is on it now is similar to GTS blue from a Viper. I will definitely keep up with updates as it comes along. As of right now I have not made any more progress with it as I have been focusing on getting my 2g dialed in. Just as I was getting it where I want it I snapped a Spyder gear off of my 4 spyder differential due to wheel hop issues : /

Yes, I thought the color was brighter than stock. Maui blue is the same as Dodge Daytona blue, according to what I’ve read, and is a little more darker/purply. Mine also was repainted, and looks like wrx blue, if I had to guess.

Bummer about your wheel hop mishap. There’s a scene in Bullit where McQeens fastback mustang has to back up and then gun it forward, and the wheel hop is outrageous! Worth a watch/rewatch, for sure. Ford 9” is legend, of course.

Congratulations on the pick up! I love the stock blue the 1gs came in, this color isn’t far off but I’m glad to hear you plan to repaint it back to the stock color.

I completely get the soft spot for DSMs heading the graveyard. If it were up to me I’d just keep buying them without actually ever finishing any of them LOL.
