Hello there, im here as recently I was rear-ended while at a red light.
Didn't seem to bad, but upon taking it into a shop and pulling the rear bumper off, it appears that the "rear body panel" which is welded onto the frame itself was completely destroyed.

The issue is:
A- Being unable to repair, we need to replace, but we cant find this piece ANYWHERE
B- The current state of the rear body panel is such that the bumper cant go back on
C- The shop has declared the vehicle "unsafe" as they say another impact would go straight into the fuel tank, risking fire.

I have a LOT of aftermarket parts in this thing so insurance is paying out. Cost not being THAT much of an issue, we seem to be stuck unable to find a way to deal with this rear body panel.
Any suggestions?

I live in Denver CO btw, in case people know some shops.
Waiting on the shop to send me pictures of it, will add to the thread once I have them

Contact Miller Import Parts, perhaps even Performance Partout and see if they have any cars in inventory that can provide what you need.

If not that, a year/make/model of what you're looking for would be helpful so we can see if someone has a parts car with an acceptable panel.

My car is a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST Spyder

Ben, here is a Spyder ad. Are you sure a rear body panel from a TSI, GSX or GST won't work?
I had people on here telling me a 97 Spyder door wouldn't work on a 95 TSI, but it bolted right up!
I had a 97 Spyder, whole rear part of the car was good, front end totaled but I had it at my house for over 2 years and finally told my son to get it out of my yard, so someone came and trailered it off.

Thank you, I just messaged him as well as the other partouts you listed.

Im not very experienced in this field so I am not 100% sure what works with what, but I BELIEVE that a 2g is very similar in terms of body parts and compatability, regardless if 98 or 99. Correct me if I am wrong.

If Its the rear 1/4 panel, then no a standard GST/GSX/N-T won't work, totally different rear panels, save bumper IIRC.

98-99 should be the same as long as it's Spyder to Spyder.

These are the pictures the shop sent me

I definately have seen worse so thats a good thing.

Sorry, bit of a noob here
Can anyone tell me if 98 parts work on a 99 2g?
At least in terms of bumpers and this panel?
If it's Spyder for Spyder, yes.

If it's from a regular GSX, GST or non-turbo, it's not a guarantee they will work.

I would just replace that rear bumper support and call it a day, if you wanted to you could add a few welded on support bars across that back panel for more support in the case of a future impact.

I dont know the story here but that rear body panel can easily be straightened. This may be an example of a shop using something like this to drive up the cost of the repair as to get more from the insurance company. Are they aware that there is not much room on this one? It will end up totaled if they write that rear panel into it. Technically, yes the panel is damaged, but it doesn't need to be replaced. Replacement would be way more invasive than needed anyway.

If you want to keep the car, get it out of there. Collect the insurance money yourself. Have the check written out to you, not the shop. Then go find someone legit to knock that easy job out for you on the side, for a fraction of the money the insurance co gave you................then you can spend the rest on the parts you really want.

The tech at the body shop probably wants your car and figures if it gets totaled he will be able to end up with it, or a buddy of his that has these cars wants to end up with it, dont think for a second that people like that dont know the value and desire of these cars...they definitely DO.
