Hello to All

So I'm not sure if you would call this a "barn" find, but to me it was a good find.
posted was an add for a 91 Talon Tsi. Went and looked, liked it, it would turn but no starting. Guy told me parked for 10 years. Fired it up about 6 years ago. I have plans for it, being the body is really good. Didn't start didn't bother me.

Bought it, brought it home, tried to turn it a couple times, no go. So next day went and got some plugs, put them in, no go. Pulled plug and tested spark, had lots. pulled the banjo bolt off the fuel filter, no fuel, ahh makes sense.

next day, pulled fuel pump, seized solid. Pulled fuel sending unit, rusty. Looked in tank, scaled rust.
So decided since it is still winter here, lets pull the tank, get it cleaned and treated. they quoted me 3 weeks to a month. no issues here. so since the tank went in i have bought and fixed:

Fuel pump- got a 133 lph pump. cleaned up the fuel pump holder. Installed new wires,
Cleanup up Fuel sending unit- When I pulled it it didn't work. Cleaned it all up, got it working again. yay
Pulled ECU. Wanted to send it in for a EEROM. no go, they don't have any boards.
Took interior our to see what has been done with the car in the past. Cleaned up what I didn't like. Old wires from Stereo install, etc. Painted some parts etc.

So tank came back to me last week, will try to install this week. the biggest thing to me right now is to hear it run. I gave myself a budget to get it running. it is approaching it. If it starts up, I'm good. if it doesn't, might re-think it. I think once it has fuel, it should go. being it was stored for that long, I think it was closer to 15 years, What greblins am i going to find....... write more later.

Sounds like a good find and you're on a good path. Even if it doesn't fire after the tank there's only a couple things it can be, have you check compression yet?
I'm sure there will be some dry-rot and crusty bits to replace after sitting so long, but if you can budget it, it's worth it to get it going IMO!

I'm planning on putting the tank in by the end of the weekend. The one thing i've been looking into is where that oil is coming from in on top of the spark plug. Is there a seal in there? I guess i will find out when i open it up.
The car only has 123000k on it so I think it is worth doing. i'm finding it hard to find some interior parts i need, but that will come later.

Yes the spark plug wells have seals in them, it would be a good idea to pull the valve cover and have a look for anything odd, then replace the valve cover seals. I'd recommend an OEM seal, and make sure not to over torque the cover, they crack easily.

Edited for crappy phone auto-correct.

First of all welcome to the DSM community. Since the car hasn't ran in a while once you fix one issue you might find another that's just how it works but as along as you stick with it you won't regret it once you get it running.

So the tank is in place. Had to go back and forth to the store for different hoses. Late tonight, found out they gave me the wrong size breather hose.So i will have to get that tomorrow.
Earlier this week, replace fuel filter, just getting it ready.should have did the valve cover

So tomorrow, get the breather hose, put on the small fuel pump rubber hose. Set the ECU in and hope for the best. I will let you know. can't run it long since there is that leak into the spark plug.

So the tank is in. Put fuel in and cranked it and started up with in 3 cranks.
So it does have a rough idle. I need to look to see what that is. I did put some plugs before, replaced the fuel filter. I will clean the throttle body today,
When I take it out of Idle, and it seem to run fine, just idle is rough.

What are your Thoughts on running some sea foam through the vacuum system?

So i have replaced the plugs and wires now, still have a rough idle. Just at idle (750 to 1000) over 1000, i don't hear or feel it.
i take it out of idle, it seems to run fine, I let off and it goes back to rough idle. Compression test this weekend and I will go from there.

I also have some white smoke coming out of the back. Checked oil and coolant, no white anywhere.

In your guys opinion, being that my car was parked for so long, should I run a oil flush through it first, then change the oil? I was thinking of running a flush and sea foam through the vacuum system. i have read on here that cleared a few guy rough idle up.

Thoughts????

I guess you could try seafoam, but I'd start by checking compression, plug gap, injectors and do a BLT (boost leak test, not the tasty sammich). Might just have a small leak or two somewhere and it's causing an idle misfire.

If you haven't changed the oil yet, I'd do that.

When cleaning the TB, inspect the fast idle air valve (FIAV) to see if it's leaking coolant anywhere into the intake tract, could be where your white smoke is coming from (might just be condensation too).

I'm personally not a big fan of seafoam, but you can give it a whirl to clean the intake tract up, just make sure you have it restricted enough and run the engine at a decent RPM so it doesn't hydrolock or anything.

Spark plug gap is good. So i need to check injectors. I will do a compression test first, then see what that tells me.

so I compression tested it and i"m getting :
131,135,135,136.
according to the book, they should be 161 and a service limit of 121
So is she shot? is that causing rough idle? next will be boost leak on the weekend.
any thoughts would be appreciated.

Update:

Im an idiot. I need to re run the compression test, i didn't have WOT. So we will see if the numbers jump up.
