Hi guys/gals,

I wanted to here opinions on monstalining a DSM. I know it’s not for everyone and that’s ok I’m happy to hear both sides of the fence. It doesn’t matter what car I own I treat it like it’s a brand new “insert premium car brand of your choice.”

I probably won’t ever spend the money for a professional paint job. I know I’m not at a level of spraying automotive paint that I would be happy with a DIY paint job. I can spray PlastiDip satisfactory and I can vinyl wrap satisfactory but in both cases it takes some special handling to keep the car nice as they are not as strong as automotive paint. So next that was what has lead me to consider monstaliner.

Pros:
It has a good color selection, good UV resistance, DIY capable, attractive price point, and incredible durability.

Cons:
It will have some level of texture to it no matter how it’s applied. It will require aircraft remover to remove if I’m ever unhappy with it. Will not have high gloss like automotive clear, not mainstream for this style vehicle and it may be very difficult to sell down the road or at a minimum reduce the potential audience.

So let me know what you think... I love the idea of not worrying about rock chips and door dings but I’m not sure how I’ll like it for the long haul.

I think this woul be a bad idea, at least for my tastes. It's kind of expensive & looks like it requires basically the same amount of prep work as painting. My opinion is you would probably have the same amount of work & cost rattle canning. You would also probably have much better results with rattle cans if you bought the spray cans that are 2 part with the punch valve in the bottoms which is a much higher quaulity paint & better spray nozzles than the normal 1 part rattle cans. In the end it's your car though. Looks like a reallly headache to remove if you're not happy & than you'll be looking a paint anyway.

Just buy some Summit racing paint for very little cash and a Harbor Freight paint gun for $20 before you permanently screw it up with that junk.

I am actually just about to do something similar, but with more steps involved. I'm going to be using "custom coat custom color" bed liner in bright white, with uv glow pigment mixed in, then sprayed over with a translucent blue pearl, then topped with a translucent flake in a gloss clear coat.

But being I just did my work truck (Ford Excursion) in the same stuff but in Blood Red, the only thing that bothers me about the texture is that when you wash it you have to use types of brushes that wont leave shit all over it. A rag or crappy bush just leaves shit everywhere, you can't just wipe it down. It's a little porous so oils have to be scrubbed a bit more. Guess it really depends on the color you want to use as well as the liner product.
Other than that I wanna do the 2g, and another one of my vehicles with the liner, but a gloss or satin on top.
One of the things I like the most about the red and the matte texture is how bright it is. Looks like red velvet cake when the sun hits it. Just stands out and draws attention, great for advertising.

This bed liner I used though, is translucent and you can mix in any color for oem look, but will still come out matte. It's somewhat durable, but not as tough as some of the other liners out there. Equivalence is to Raptor liner I believe. Although, as far as resale, I have no intention of selling the Excursion or the 2g so was an easy decision to do it. Excursion was plasti dipped before, and that was a bi*** to get off in itself, and wasn't great for work conditions. I don't know about Monstaliner, but this stuff I was able to sand in a spot that got messed up and resprayed it and came out good.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents, will have a test panel sprayed for the 2g within the month if you're interested in how it comes out.
Like Mello said though, ultimately it'll be about having to remove it when the time comes. So it kind of boils down to if you're the type that likes frequent color/ texture changes or if you prefer the other guy scratches his car in the process of trying to ding yours.

I'm not a fan. Pay for Maaco to spray it if you do prep work, slip the painter/spray tech an extra hundo and can it a day.

Otherwise do what @motomattx said, and add in a painting book to study from eBay for another 20 bux.

Bedlined cars just scream lazy to me :toobad: :nono:
