I have a moderately stock talon tsi awd and the engine seems to be missing. I was going to replace the spark plugs and wires, but was wondering what plugs to run and what the gap should be. I was looking at NGK iridium plugs.

Our engines like the copper plugs best. You'll have trouble with others. Stay with NGK BPR6ES (or 7ES) gapped at 0.030".

As far as i know, allmost all spark plugs have copper cores.
I think the OE plugs you listed have nickel electrode.
Platinum and iridium plugs all have copper cores.

Pre-gapped is for a bone stock engine, not to mention if the box has ever been dropped. checking and gapping plugs appropriately is crucial, especially with turbo DSMs. My car will barely run on .030" gap, I have to run .025" and my setup isn't even that wild. Always check and gap plugs appropriately.

@dustyboner good info to know, thanks for the heads up!
I think @luv2rallye was referring to standard ngk plugs that read "copper" on the box. They may have the nickel coating on the electrode for longevity purposes, but I think the advice was to stay away from platinum/iridium/fancy plugs as they have a history or not working well in these cars, as well as many other platforms not initially designed with those plugs in mind.

I had iridium plugs in my car swapped for 7ES shortly after I got my tune. I actually think the iridium has a smoother idle. Worth the extra money, maybe not? Depends on your preferences I guess.

I though i should point out the fact that most all plugs have copper cores because some people may not under stand what you mean by a copper plug. Basically if it doesn't say platinum or iridium it will be a standard (copper) plug.

Case in point, thissy here iridium plug. Its says copper core

I'm sure most of you guys already know this stuff but for the 3 people that don't, you do now.

on ngks the higher the heat range, the colder the plug.
BPR6ES -- heat range 6
BPR7ES -- heat range 7 - colder
-----------------------------------------------------------
Any ngk plug that ends with "-11"
like
BPR6ES-11
is pre-gapped at 1.1mm (.043")

BPR6ES
is pre-gapped at 0.9mm (.035")

so they are the same plug just gapped differently.
I only bring this up because the 1999 FSM has

Its always best to stay with the plugs that the ignition system was designed to work with.
Here are the specs on the BPR6ES plug for anyone that cares.

The service manual recommends. 032 gap.
Depending on mods and how you drive the car. Luv2rally recommends. 030 which could be the magic gap number.
I've seen alot of us go .028 or shorter. I'm not gonna say one is better for everyone to use but .030 might be the corrected version of stock gap.

Regarding the "missing" you are experiencing, mine had a similar problem, but only did it once the engine was warm. Turned out to be my coils. Replaced them and problem went away. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.
