Did these come stock in any Eclipse or Talon? Is this just an engine with the turbo system removed? Is it any better than the 420a as it sits?

I just randomly stumbled across this on Ebay and wondered WHY

1g dsm's came with a na 4g63.
Euro spec 2g's came with a na 7bolt.
And many other cars, such as galants, sonatas, rvr, summit wagons all came with a version of a naturally aspirated Sirius engine...

They were a European model for 2gs, some 1gs had an n/a 4g (both mentioned were GS designation iirc) and I'm sure there are galants, as well as a handful of other cars that had na 4gs.

Since the 420a was a Chrysler motor and the 4g was already used in usdm, edm and jdm markets, instead of changing the entire chassis and importing a "new" motor that may have not met emissions (idk details) or had other check marks against it, edm and jdm markets stuck with the n/a 4g. This would save huge on manufacturing costs, provide a cheaper insurance option with the same look, make emissions cert all the easier and still have the long-standing reliability that the 4g was accredited.

Frankly I wish they'd done the same here and left the 420a in the neon and other Chrysler cars. I'm only hating a little bit, as I just don't think the 420a is as venerable in a performance car. It's a great eco engine that can be a little sporty, but I'd take an n/a 4g any day over a 420a. I'm keeping my eye out for a 1g GS as is.

Only the usdm and the 1g gsr4 were turbo 4g cars.
The 2g euro were n/t 4g cars. And some 1g oversees cars were non turbo. Might be the 1.8l tho.
Ohh the galant gsx were AWD n/t 4g cars as well.

For sh××× and giggles tho. My 05 hundai has a n/a 4g63. Kias, hyundais mostly did come with the na 4g.

What Hyundai do you have?
Curious since I've pulled a few Kia heads from g4js motors to play with, and tho they share alot of the same architecture, they're short block is notably different from the 4g63 (Evo/3g style) they mimic. I know Hyundai and Kia have several models that were just slightly changed 1g/2g 4g63s, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 variants, have a few heads from them also, haha.

It's an 05 elantra. I read the tag on the firewall years ago. I go 4g63 no sh×× LOLz. 06 was last year of evo 9 if I remember right. So a 4g in an 05 isnt crazy to think.

Here’s an example a NA 96-98 Hyundai Sonata interesting fact that it’s a 6 bolt with a crank sensor. The CAS is under the intake cam gear as well. They came in 1.8 and 2.0 flavors. A few parts are interchangeable like the valve cover, intake manifold, and timing covers...

Well what's the point of an N/A 4g63 if they already have a 420a?

The better question is "What's the point of an 420A if they already had a N/A 4g63"?

The answer had to do with corporate politics and maybe cost savings.

They actually talked about this in the '95 tech manual. One of the major contemporary complaints for the first gen was its repair costs, and DSM made a concerted effort to bring those costs down by sourcing the American made 420a for the lower trims for its parts availability. Also the 420a was one of the most powerful naturally aspirated 4cyls available in '95, more horsepower than the NA 4g63 in the 1st gen GS.

I think history has lost sight that the 420a wasn't a bad motor, it's was just nothing compared to the legendary 4G63T.

My perspective is simple, this created long term segmentation. Imagine what things would be like if all of the domestic 2G's had 4G63 in them like the international market. All those shells waiting for heart transplants...

Oh yeah, absolutely; I see where you're coming from. Every time I see a mint body 420a 2g in the junkyard I have that little pang of regret that I can't save it and drop a 4g in it.
