Noticed that the engine I am building has this mount broken off on the bedplate. Of course, I notice this after it is assembled with new parts. Second picture is a bedplate without mount broken off. Am I screwed with this bedplate, or would it be ok to run without that transmission bolt?

I'm not sure if anyone can answer your question definitively. It might be okay in the long run. If it were my car, I'd reluctantly replace the bedplate.

Can you replace the bedplate? I would think you would need to line hone the mains. I always thought they were a matched set.

You can try to have it welded.

I can't remember but is that where one of the alignment dowels is?

Yes, good point. Assuming he has the piece that broke off, he could attempt to have it welded, otherwise he'd have to replace the whole short block. I think it'd actually be less work to just replace the block.

I'd rather not have to replace the block as I have money in machining in it. That second picture is from the stock bottom end block that is currently in the car, I dont know if just swapping the bedplate will work with clearances. I don't have the broken piece, I might see if there is a way to fab up something to weld to that end. It doesn't look to be a very crucial mounting point but I would like something there for peace of mind.

If that's an alignment dowels spot you are probably in for some trouble. If it's not, you may be able to get away with not having it.

I'm not sure if there is one in that area or not. Next step is removing the old motor, I'll get a better idea when it's out, then I can line up the trans on the new one.

Maybe take both bedplates off, clamp them together and then take a Sawzall and cut them diagonally in the same spot on both, then take the good piece and have it welded to the broken area on the bad one.
