Hey all, so after running with my dads hand-me-down Dakota v6 for a year I decided to make my first real car purchase. It’s a 97 eclipse gst that I bought for a measly $1000 with way too much done to the car. I decided with the dsm platform primarily because of the support and the reliability that the 4g63 brings to the table.
With this being my first real car and all I feel that I have already made a few mistakes and they will show their fangs when I go to start the car. As well the car came with a Hx40 which, after a little research, seems to be way too much for the build route that I’m hoping to take with the car.
Any help/criticism is always helpful as I’m just building the car with a couple of friends and with our combined knowledge, know very little as to what we are getting into.
Hopefully this car will carry my passion with cars to new heights and ultimately flow into the the same community that I am borrowing so much information from.

I would just like to say welcome to the DSM world and what is it you’re trying to find out?

Thank you. For what I’m trying to find out I think it’s just basics I believe, I had to rewire the whole car but I have a bunch of clips that go no where and things like that. Once I have it running I should be fine but it’s about 1-2 hours on the forums for about 30 minutes to an hour of work.

I would recommend going with a cheap smaller turbo and getting the car running such as a 16g. It will be a lot easier to learn and get running than the HX40. What ECU does the car have?

I wish I could, but with the manifold set up and the funds I have available, being a high school student an all, I’m pretty much forced into something with an internal waste gate. It’s running the eprom ecu I believe so I can run ECMlink v3 when the time arises. The hardest part for me right now is sourcing an o2 housing that’ll fit to both the t3 housing (?) and the apexi downpipe. As well as finding a decent used intercooler/bov set up north of the border. I know that I could use the classifieds here but customs and shipping will be a pain to deal with.

16g is a pretty affordable turbo, and is internally waste-gated. I don't keep up with the price of these things but I picked up an evo3 16g from a guy in Edmonton for $150. You might already know but just be aware that when you want to run ECMlink, you have to send in your ECU to ECMtuning for them to put the chip in it. Also note that v4 is coming out (at earliest) later this year.
Best thing I can recommend for you is to join Alberta DSM & 4G63 (facebook group). The DSM community in Alberta is crazy helpful, and we sell parts like the stuff you are looking for (a buddy is parting out his build right now and has an fmic setup if you're interested, likely has an o2 housing for you as well).
Good luck with the build! Just want to quickly mention, be sure to post your big questions in DSMTuners, not in that Facebook group if you join. It helps other people who might be having similar issues in the future, to find your thread on DSMTuners and follow it to a solution. For all the small questions, anyone in that Facebook group would likely be happy to answer.

Okay thank you, I never knew the 16g was internally wastegated. I will make the switch soon. With the ECMlink upgrade coming soon would it be worth it to buy the v3 and upgrade later? Or go get it tuned professionally now and just wait for v4? As per your advice I joined the Alberta DSM group and am already seeing items of interest. Thanks for the response, I learned a lot.

I have a 16g and might be looking to make the switch to hx40 soon, pm me and maybe we can work out a trade ;).
It's up to you but personally, I'm waiting for v4. You have the drive to learn how to build these cars, might as well learn how to tune them too! From what I've heard, ECMlink v3 is a super friendly interface, they have guides, and an active community to help guide you through everything; v4 will likely be an even better upgrade in terms of user friendliness.
Glad you see stuff you like in the group! Let me know if you want my buddy's fmic I already asked about it for you.

A 16g should run nearly perfectly on a stock tune. I would say your goal should be to get the car running and keep it simple while you learn the ropes. Given that, I don't know anything about v4 but frankly you could even get by with Dsm link v2. It will also be a lot easier to find an o2 housing for a 16g since it has the same bolt pattern as the stock turbo. Did the previous owner upgrade the injectors or Mas airflow sensor? These are things that would necessitate tuning more than a 16g would. Dsm link still makes them stupid easy. Also Dsm link has in the past had discounts for upgrading so you could probably get v3 then only pay an upgrade fee when v4 comes out. Then again I could be wrong.

It needs a tune anyways, if you take a look at my build profile it’s bored and cammed out and I don’t really feel comfortable running a “built” motor on a stock tune. Furthermore, from what I remember about what the seller told me, they are 880cc injectors, I didn’t ask about the sensor but I’ll take a look at it when I have time tomorrow. What should I be looking for in regards to it, just signs of porting? I’m considering just buying ECMlink new outright, as I can’t seem to find any local sellers.

I didn't look at your dsm profile before but it actually looks like you might have ECMlink, that or your car has a flash tune. There is no way to run what you're running without a tune. Might be worth it to open the ECU and see if there is a big red chip that says ECMtuning on it, unless the guy you bought it from specified that it was flashed. Considering yours is a 97, there might be a decent chance that you already have ECMlink considering the previous owner would have had to do a H8 ECU swap to flash tune the ECU.
You're 100% okay to run a built car on a "stock" or less crazy tune, problems only arise from people running built motor tunes on stock motors LOL
I actually know an ECMlink v3 being sold near you in Lloydminster if you're interested. It was too far of a drive for me and he wouldn't do Paypal, and in those cases I want to deal with someone face-to-face. Entirely up to you if you want to get v3 now or wait for v4 (considering whether you have it already or not).

I wish I could, but currently I only have the funds for either an intake setup or ECMlink.
I’ll check out the ecu tonight to see what’s up.
