Hey everybody. I've been doing lots of readying about this lately. I've got a no crank issue. This 1995 eagle talon TSi AWD I have never started it, it has an engine rebuild with less than 100km on it. When I bought it I was told the starter was not working and needed to be changed. I was given used replacement starters when I got the car, tried both if then, bench tested one of them and it tested good. So I got a brand new starter and new battery with 700 CCA battery is charged, clutch safety switch is unplugged, alternator fuse is good, when I turn the key to start, I can hear the starter clicking, but it wont turn the engine. I tried jumping the solenoid with a screwdriver and the same thing happened. I tried turning the motor with a wratchet to make sure it wasnt siezed or anything and it turns quite easily.

So in summary, my brand new starter is engaging. My battery has 12.3V, and everything else I can think of is good. What am I missing? Why wont my car start?

Update. I checked the voltages, and the starter is gettibg a solid 12.3v from the battery, and the cable from the ignition to tge starter solenoid is getting 11.4V when I turn the key. Again, if I jump the solenoid it still clicks, doesnt turn the motor, the motor is not seized, I'm really at a loss here, any help eould be greatly appreceated!

Im pretty sure the starter is the correct one. It looks identical to my other 3 starters and fits the same. If it werent engagine the flywheel then wouldn't I hear it free wheeling like it would in a bench test? Also I did bench test it, and it tests good. Like I said, it clicks even when I jump 12V straight to the thing, so that makes me think that its a bad ground on the starter, would that make sense? I tried using a jumper cable from my positive terminal to the starter instead if the regular cable, because the connections on that cable were looking kinda iffy, but same thing. I'm really at a loss here, I feel like I've tried everything. please help!

There are two different starters, one for auto and one for manual, if you have the wrong one(s) they can act like you are describing, the might look the same and be different if you know what to look for, the parts store books are wrong too, so dont trust them.

Hello!

It looks as if you have a wrong starter motor (one for AT), and it is physicaly not able to engage the flywheel. Flex plate on AT has a different gearing compared to one on MT.
Double check the part no. on your new starter.

Hope it helps.

I got it from rock auto, they say it is for the M/T. How can I check besides the P/N. Are there visual differences on the starter so I can determine for sure if it is or isnt right one?

If the starter just clicks and doesn’t engage, then it could be several things,
1.- Bad connection (low current),
2.- Weak starter,
3.- Seized engine.
4.- Wronge starter.

I would go with number one (in your cituation).

Make sure the ground wire from the battery goes straight to one of the starter bolts (one of the two bolts that bolts down the starter, right at the transmission side), clean both ends of the cables (-,+) on the starter and the battery side.
Do that first then report back, I’m almost sure that’s your problem.

If your starter clicks but its not engaging then I would say to try a different starter or take it out and connect it straight to a battery and see if it engages you could have a bad starter even though you said you tested it you never know. Also as mentioned above there are two different starters one for auto and manual but I would recommend taking the starter out and connecting it directly if it works then you probably have a connection issue.

Have you tried jumping the starter (installed) from an alternate battery?
If so does it then turn the engine over?

When bench testing it actuates out and spins?

I've tries multiple batteries and jumping the car with a battery charger. During a bench test the starter operates totally normally, it actuates and spins.

This is the best place to start checking imo. Having different starter plates/starter can cause the exact issue your having. It’s not known if the prior owner put that engine or trans in/mixed up the wrong components hence selling it?

If you didn’t read post 12- the variations in starters, flywheels, and starter plates have to match to function correctly. It sounds like you’ve ruled out all the other possibilities
