I drive a 99 eclipse spyder gs. First thought I was going through some major transmission problems. Wasn’t shifting properly...recognized P,R, and D but nothing else. Was stressed out...finally got the time to go get the codes pulled and come to find out the solenoid control pack is bad(major relief) so I’m just curious on where it is exactly and the difficulty level of changing it out is? What’s needed? And so forth. I’ve owned this car for 3-4yrs now and I’ve loved it. So far maintaince wise it’s been some pretty cheap fixes. 20yrs old and still going strong

I moved your thread because your car actually has a 4G6x engine, not a 420A. Good luck!

Thanks. I have the part now. But still totally clueless. My first dsm. My mobile mechanic seems to be busy asf and I’m trying to get this done ASAP. I’ve searched all over YouTube and the interwebs and can’t find any videos on how to do this.

You would need to take off the transmission pan (around 10 bolts) and it will be bolted on to the valve body of the transmission. Fluid will want to start spilling out when the pan gets loose so be prepared for the mess. You can usually catch it in a large drain pan. Get a transmission filter kit (like Wix) and change the filter while you are there then fill back up with the proper fluid to the correct level. :thumb:

Did your unit come with a new gasket? It should have one in the box for the area I colored for you......
The picture is of the transmission side of the unit, the bolts will come in from the other side. The red circle is where the gasket will go, green is where the bolts will come in from the other side. :thumb:

Yeah it came with a gasket. Just didn’t think it would go into the transmission because of the plug

That transmission has a drain plug, drain the fluid before pulling the pan, also use ONLY aft+4 fluid in it to refill, nothing else. The fluid is full when its between the marks on the stick with the car RUNNING and in neutral, check again after its warmed up, also run it through all gear positions P,R,N,D,L and then back up to neutral before checking, stopping in each position for several seconds in between moves.

Those components hold up in the transmission. You have at least 2-3 solenoids in there 2. It isn't a hard job but maybe a little scary if you haven't been around automatic transmissions much. DONT OVER TIGHTEN IT. If you need help, ask. I don't have the FSM for that model. ALSO, check the filter and make sure that it isn't a "revised" version that takes shorter bolts and if it has it's own bolts, use them! We had a revised one that didn't come with shorter bolts and the originals ran in so far that they broke into the valve body and ruined it, which is kind of a hard thing to find. Just experiences I have had to deal with but that job is totally doable at home. Unbolt and unplug old unit and reverse the procedure. If I find some specs or if someone else has some, please post them up!

Thank you everyone for all the helpful advice and information. Now I just have to find the time. Hopefully tomorrow since I don’t have to work until late evening. But it’s much appreciated:)

If you get in a pinch, jump back on here and let us help out. You will find that it isn't difficult, just unexplored territory for some. Good Luck, I am confident you can do this yourself!

Well sadly it’s my lack of tools. Which min trying to work on but then something comes up ughhh LOL. So unfortunately I have to outsource my work

Well......bad news:...wrong effin part. But I was able to borrow the tools to do it myself. Unfortunately no one local has the right part. Rockauto is the only place I can find it so far. So now I’m just putting everything back together and praying that my car will stil be drivable

Now even more bad news....with all the stress of everything today....I can’t remember how all the bolts go and I’ve been trying one by one and I’m just about to lose hope and say screw it

Stick them in the valve body or whatever you removed and have them all stick out the mating side approximately the same amount.
