It's a title given to certain members by their peers to let everyone know they are knowledgeable and helpful. It's a way for people to quickly identify members whose advice you might want to listen to. They are considered the resident experts in our community - not to say they're always right, but they typically have quite a bit of experience with the DSM platform. It can be difficult sometimes deciding who to trust in online communities like this. This is one way we try and address that here on the site.

Usually other Wisemen/Mods and long-time regular members recommend members for this title. This title isn't handed out very often, though we should probably start identifying more candidates again since some of the Wisemen aren't that active these days.

A person may have gone through 10 different DSMs, yet he may not really know what he's doing or talking about. Likewise, someone may only own one, but his knowledge and understanding of the different mechanics surrounding these cars might be very broad. Couple that with a generally welcoming and positive attitude, as well as helpful replies; in my eyes that's what might make a DSM wiseman. It's also important to acknowledge other people's opinions and not be afraid to stand up for your methods and ideas. Like Ludachris said, they may not always be right. You know a good Wiseman when he/she realizes a mistake might have been made and owns up to it. I've seen it happen a few times around here without too much drama.

Just my 2 cents.

That pretty much sums it up!
We are lucky that we have the diverse group that shares what they know and do. It's just a title, no more, but does give you a sense that their replies are probably worth reading.

Exactly - it comes down to the nominated member's posting history. Anyone can suggest anyone really, but we have our site leaders look through the posting history of those who get nominated to see what advice that member has given and also make note of their attitude. Part of it is their knowledge, their participation level here, their candor, and willingness to help others. We like to choose people who participate in a way that fits in with the spirit of this site.

Maybe they considered "Wisecracker" but didn't have that title.....:p JK
Always appreciate your input Paul.

That is BS. Case in point, "Defiant".

Ahhh yes, good old Defiant. He's a legend on this site. Notice I said "we like to choose people who participate in a way that fits in with the spirit of this site". Our track record isn't perfect.

We've given the title to a few members over the past 2 decades that didn't always represent the user title the way we would have liked, same goes for a few moderators too, but that's bound to happen in any community site.

Defiant definitely made my job extremely challenging at times. He helped a LOT of people when he was active here, he still has more than double the post count of any other member here. He was loved by many and despised by quite a few too. And he'd tell you that I repeatedly barked at him to quit being condescending with his responses in the forums. I had to delete many of his posts over the years and he would apologize for his attitude regularly - there were times I'd get so f'ing frustrated :|. I think he might have actually quit visiting because of my hounding him - well that and the repetitive questions, but I don't know for sure. He just disappeared one day.

I still miss the positives he brought to the site.

With all of that said, we still have always tried to give the Wisemen title to knowledgeable AND friendly members. We don't have a perfect track record of getting that right, but we've always tried.

Take it easy. It was a joke. Lol

I loved that guy. When you saw him on you knew a snowflake somewhere was about to cry. ROFL

He definitely brought entertainment to the board.

Ahh man Defiant. I miss that guy really. He was a nice guy once u got behind the A hole persona. He really helped alot of us out back what, more than 10 years ago.

You sound like you have someone in mind, can always pm Chris and a couple other mods/wisemen and put in your recommendation! Worst thing they could reply is "not right now" I'd imagine.
Either way it's a nice way to acknowledge someone's contributions and put a marker on them for the mods to consider :thumb:

Maybe there should be another title for those of us who aren't smart enough to part with these damn cars after 10+ years :p

Man Defiant.... I fought with him so much back in the day. I'm tempted to mayke a typo just to see if it brings him out of the woodworks so he can yell at me...

I believe one of the first PM's I got was from Defiant about a typo, withiny first 3 weeks or so on the forum. Almost made me not log back on haha

I need to get back into helping in the tuning forum. I'm getting rusty!

Life has been busy...And I got addicted to my motorcycle habit again
