This thread will tell you what cams you have if you take off the valve cover. https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/camshaft-identification-information.435135/

This thread will tell you exactly what cams do. https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/cam-basics.221200/

If I'm not mistaken, 272 cams are far too aggressive without upgrading other head components such as springs and lifters. Cams definitely help though, but it's not as straight-forward as going 272/272. You can research different intake/exhaust combos that fit your style of driving.

Keep in mind, the OP has a 420a so the first link will provide very little information for him as those are all 4G63 part numbers.

272's are not going to be helpful on a 420a with no other mods.

Oops I've gone around assuming again :nono:

Cams will be a net negative without any other modifications. They NEED tuning or your driveability will suffer and it will not run well. They should also go with full intake and exhaust modifications, and valve springs are likely necessary. Think of aftermarket parts as a balance - they only work as well as the weakest link (and there are many "weak links" in the 420A). The cams need a supporting cast to improve airflow and some proper tuning, otherwise they just won't make power.

Here you go!
Generally I wouldn't recommend aftermarket cams for a 420a unless you're going balls-to-the-wall, but try to keep them as mild as possible or source stock cams. I could probably find you a set in a day or two for just the cost of shipping if you needed.

There is no real set number so don't get hung up on it. Those values don't mean anything as they drastically different from one manufacturer to another. Even trying to compare stock to aftermarket is useless as theret is no standard . You have to measure actual duration at a certain lift with the stock cams and compare them to aftermarket at that same lift value. With that said, no 264/272/280 cam on the market will actually have those advertised duration numbers.

Realistically at .040", or .050", lift most aftermarket cams will be in the 200-230° range of actual duration.
