Need as much info as you guys can give me about taking on/off the gearbox on a 420a 2g, my gearbox broke and need to get the car back on the road asap, need to know what models from other cars gearboxes fit - talking about MANUAL
info on AUTO swap from manual to auto also is welcome if i find auto gearbox and if its relatively easy i can swap it in

IF anyone has had a similar problem please give me as much info as you can - i had no choice and drove the car back to my garage and the car runs fine on 1st, 2nd and 3rd, also reverse, only first when engaging has a very slight clunk sound but not all the time, the motor runs fine as well

what if i weld the hole shut and fill it with new oil and try going that way? do you think it could be a one-time problem and i'll get away with just welding the hole closed?

i'll be spending my whole night on here searching for any threads that can help me on taking on/off the gearbox, possibly a manual-to-auto swap, what could ahve caused it etc, but if you know anything please share with me! i need to get the car back on the road tomorrow or within the next 2 days

The diff pin started coming out and hit the side of the case. You could take the trans apart, fix the differential and have the case welded back together. The hole is not that bad.

You can also grab a trans from a neon and drop it right in. Early 2000 have the hydraulic clutch like the eclipse does. If you find a late 90s neon they have a cable clutch and the bell housing is different.

Some of the neons had a different final drive gear ratio but you can still use those transmissions.

Also check 90 s avengers and early 2000 pt cruisers

Thanks a lot! Do you think the pin might have hopped out on the road (i drove the car back to the garage no issues almost) or if i open the gearbox, tighten it back in place and weld the case, it'd be alright?
I have a complete car with auto transmission that is being parted out. 420a car. PM if interested. Located in southern Wisconsin.
thanks a lot but i'm located in Europe :)

Its probably still in the differential. Its a rather large pin. It should have a pin that holds it in the diff, it has probably broken allowing the diff pin to start sliding out. There is a newer design that they put in the newer neons that removes that spring pin and adds diff pin saver tabs that just contain the pin.

If you pull the trans, you can just pop the bell housing off of the trans and pull the diff to inspect the damage. All of the other guts in the trans will stay inside. If it is repairable, you can make the repair and just seal it back up.

Just to confirm, are you sure you actually have a 420A? I'm only asking because I know the European version of the GS (and maybe RS too?) had an N/T 4G63.

absolutely sure it is imported from florida :) i ended up replacing the whole gearbox because i had no time left to play with fixing it
i used a box from a pt cruiser with the same engine

Sounds good--I'm glad you got it sorted out!
thanks :) my speed is reading wrong stuff now though, i guess i need to swap out the speed sensor from my box to the new one - it was an EU PT cruiser so it probably has a km/h sensor rather than a mp/h :)
