My new AWD swapped 97 Spyder project is in desperate need of rear cv axles. The inner joints are so sloppy they feel like they are about to fall apart and I get a horrible clanking noise from the rear with on/off throttle.

I've been reading up on the rear axle availability issues, and think I may have found a solution for new rear axles. I'm not quite sure though, since there isn't a clear-cut definitive topic on this that I can find in searching. These threads are where I found the most info, that leads me to believe I have found a solution that I haven't yet seen discussed:
http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/lets-talk-difs.400884/
http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/evo-rear-lsd-in-a-1g-2g-housing.467544/

So, if I understand correctly, the inner cups for 1g and 2g LSD rear differentials are the same. I also think I've confirmed this by looking up the Mitsubishi part numbers for the inner cups (I get MB837361 for left 1992-1999 and MB837360 for right 1992-1999). Can anyone help me confirm this is correct?

I also believe the 2G outer axles are the same between non-LSD and LSD axles, but the 1G outers are different because they have the bolt on flange.

So, SURTRACK/TRAKMOTIVE offers new complete CV axles for the 2G rear non-LSD for $65.79 each from Rock Auto (p/n MI8196). https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=5468055&cc=1380439&jsn=387&jsn=387

SURTRACK/TRAKMOTIVE also offers new complete CV axles for the 1G that I believe are configured for the LSD rear for $66.79 each from Rock Auto (MI8195 left, MI8194 right).

Knowing that aftermarket axles are not necessarily the same internally as OE components, and that aftermarket companies like to keep things common to reduce costs, I'm thinking I should be able to buy a set of the 1G axles and a set of the 2G axles and swap the inner cups to end up with new 2G rear LSD CV axles. My one hangup right now, is that if it were really this simple, why would they not already offer a 2G LSD axle option?

At those prices, I'm thinking about being the guinea pig and giving this a try if what I posted above is correct info, then it just might work.

Well, I guess I'll answer my own questions and confirm we do in fact have a new option for cheap NEW 2G rear cv axles! It didn't quite work out like I expected, instead it worked out even better. Turns out, the MI8196 is the correct axle for the right rear with lsd, so that one is a direct replacement. The only one that needs "work" to be correct is the left rear. It was as simple as swapping the inner cup from the MI8195 onto the other MI8196. All the measurements are an exact match. Then you have a left and right 2G rear axle for the lsd rear and a left over right side axle for a 1G lsd rear. Total cost about $200 plus shipping costs and you can possibly sell the left over 1G right side axle to recoup a little of that expense.

Now, I will admit these are cheap Chinese replacement axles, so probably only suitable for daily driver status. You guys doing high hp builds probably still need to go with the expensive upgrade axles instead of these. I apologize to those selling the used 2g rear axles if I just hurt your market price!

I wish you had came up with this a couple of months ago when I was looking for rear axles. I ended up just getting high performance axles because I couldn't find a new or decent set. All I was finding is old junk axles for about the same price.

Sorry if I am in an old thread, but I can´t find this info anywhere
In the pic you have uploaded it seems like the axles you have bought are thiner that the oem ones.
Did you measure that??
I think it is a very good option for people like me who has an LSD diff and non LSD axles but I´m worry about the HP or torque capabilities of aftermarket axles

Keep your 2g non lsd axles and non lsd pumpkin. The Evo 3-9 lsd is a direct replacement for the open diff in the non lsd pumpkin. They are about $200 on eBay. Mechanical lsd is better than viscous.

So the outer axle was the same? my rear axles are sized into the hubs on my 2g gsx. Could I just buy a set of 1g axles and swap the outer hub spline and get new hub assemblys?

I don't see what the problem is - I swapped my stock open dif with a junkyard lsd and kept the same axles - the left one wouldn't fit in the dif all the way without a hair of trimming, but worked great after that, no problems! Just use the non-lsd axles.

Isn’t there too much play with this setup? The tri-bearing thing that goes into the cup being too sloppy? I have this exact setup without knowing because I replaced my open diff with LSD and cups, but there’s too much play for my liking, and I hear it clanking on decel and accel. Am I missing something?

The tripod at part #3 is what has too much play in my scenario, but I’m technically using the same non-LSD shafts with the LSD cups that @daughters-car is referring to

This doesn't work with stock axle components. I think the original problem I had that started this post was because the previous owner had swapped stock LSD inner cups onto stock non-LSD axles. I don't think the stock components are the same size and leads to excessive play in the cups. The solution I found worked because the aftermarket companies like to standardize parts as much as possible for cost savings. Since they are aftermarket new components, they don't have to follow or use OE specs. There was no play using the SURTRACK/TRAKMOTIVE components I linked in my initial few posts. My daughter still has this car and those same axles are still doing just fine.

Got it! That makes sense, thanks for the help

So I tried installing MI8196 into my lsd passenger side like you said, but for whatever reason there is in and out play, as if it isn't fully locked in. When I push on it, I can hear the end of the splines striking metal, and when I drive with it installed, I get a horrible clicking noise. I don't know if there is something wrong with my diff, or if I actually need to swap the cups over to the 1g ones, but I'm concerned about the clicking.

Just wanted to say thanks for this detailed post, still available in 2023. I was able to order MI 8196 from Rock Auto (even though for whatever reason they don't list it under a 1998 Talon). Part came and looks like a direct match for what was there, which was not original so I was having trouble finding a replacement CV joint boot. thanks again.

If I were you I would keep the old one and eat the core charge. The likelihood of rebuilding later is probably greater than finding another.

I'm glad you guys are having success with this part because I ended up sourcing an oem axle and it solved my strange clicking issue. That being said, if anyone needs the rockauto axle I have one now LOL
