2G Block with no vin

So I got this block basically for free and was just trying to determine what year it was (early/late split thrust etc). While looking, I see the spot where the vin should be, there's no vin... I cleaned it and nothing is there. Were there years that didn't have it? Or did I end up with a stolen block? Anyway, I took some pics, I'm kind of new to the 4g63 world.

I wouldn't say for sure but I would lean more to not stolen. I have a block that looks very similar same only markings on lower tag and not on upper tag by deck. Mine is for sure not stolen but I am also curious why some blocks dont have markings. Curious what others have to say.

Those were blocks that were installed from the factory when a warranty block was needed, the original had the vin.

Yep, factory replacement blocks don’t have a vin. Car probably crank walked and got a replacement block.

I think you will need to remove that splash shield and the crank girdle and take more pics to determine year
