So the car ive been working on, I met my friend today with intention of breaking in the new motor i built. The engine is running great, oil looks wonderful..... So as we are about to leave my friend attempted to put the car into gear.... and NOTHING. The clutch and flywheel are act, brand new. New fork and pivot ball. Sometimes the trans would start making that syncro grinding....I took the shift cables off and attempted to shift the trans manually with the same results. The only thing i can think of is something went wrong when installing the clutch? The trans is a known good running unit. What the hell could of caused this if it happened during install? This is a galant vr4 for the record

Shift fork or selector broken? Does it go into any gear or have you tried others besides first?

What about a bad VC or CD?
Does not go into any gear.... period. Tried with engine on, off, with and without shift linkage attached. People are telling me clutch but that doesnt make sense to me.

Maybe. I still feel like something should move. I'm still leaning towards fork or CD/VC. Maybe the input shaft is toast?

I know when my CD blew it didn't do squat. VC was welded and you couldn't tell anything was moving in any gear, just free rev.

When you pull on the shifter on the trans you can hear it clicking into gear, like a normal trans would do. Its just when u let out the clutch it free revs and sometimes will start grinding like somethings caught up inside the trans. Everyone here is telling me the clutch is the culprit somehow......we will find out monday

Well then, lead with that next time.

It clunking into gear is normal. Meaning it shifts fine.

If you have a blown center diff, or an axle is not splined in place properly, the torque will then exit at the disconnect drive point.

If you just had the trans out, you may not have inserted the axles properly. The grinding noise may be the splines catching occasionally.

Disk installed in the correct direction?

I didn't want to bring it up but didn't want you pulling your hair out either. I really hope it is and its a simple fix!!! :thumb:

If it wasn't in correct direction, he would be able to shift it into each gear with engine off. And wouldn't be able to shift it into each gear with engine running.
Well I can shift mine when its dead. A backwards disk doesnt tell the transmission anything really, does it?

It matters man, one side is meant to go towards the flywheel, careful with that. Crappy reason to have to pull a trans after having just installed.

Its not a big deal, if fact out of all the things that cAn go wrong. A dsm manual tranny is a dime a dozen compared to the engine I built for him. Several thousands of dollars and hours of work. We can pull a tranny in less than an hour. Ill let u guys know tmrw.

Ah, this tells me I bet you will find a blown center diff. The off and on clunking is a sign of the side gears being chewed up and rattling around.

This is what mine did. I think it was mostly gone when I got the trans, cuz I babied it after building my motor, and one day just rolling down to my buddies @ 30mph, I heard and felt some horrific clunks/rattles. Pulled off immediately, neutraled, checked over everything and saw no issues. I drove off and eventually forgot there had ever been an issue, and once I broke the motor in and got link, the first time I launched the car it finished off the CD.

the clunking had been the side gears disintegrating and getting lodged up in the diff housing, then once I put some shock to it, they pinched up hard and shattered the side gears. Then there was no movement, just free rev. Ended up spiral fracturing the front drive output, so that put that trans out of commission.

My friend was sent the wrong disk, the hub was larger than the trans. Maybe evo? Stupid issue to have. Trans is fine. Stupid stupid stupid. The disk was just rattling on the input shaft.

So loose that you could actually spin the disk around 360
