Hey everyone,

I’m a total newbie to all things project car related, but I’m thinking about finally committing to a first go. For months I’ve been seeing an eclipse parked in a driveway near my girlfriend’s house, and recently went over to ask if it was for sale.

Turns out it is, for $1000, and it’s a 97 GST. The guy I spoke to said his brother is a mechanic and bought it a few years ago to fix up. He was daily driving it until he moved to Texas a few years ago (I’m in NY.) It’s been sitting for a while but the guy said he starts it now and again (last time was like a month ago). Odometer says about 118k miles. He gave it a jump and it started up pretty easily and moved it back and forth in the driveway.

I asked about leaks, said there was a small one around the head gasket. To my rookie senses it seems to be a healthy engine that would just need routine maintenance for a car of this age.

The exterior is pretty beat, no dents I saw but the paint is stripping, a spot of rust around the rear window, needs brakes, rotors, tires.

My plan with this car is to do as much as I can myself. Outside of replacing wear items/seals on the engine, I’d like to make it look presentable and down the road perhaps start tinkering with the engine. Would $1k for this be reasonable?

Few things to check before you commit to it, especially being in NY. Strut towers, and rear quarter panels inside the wheel wells. If both of those areas are rust free, $1000 is a steal and I'd jump on it immediately.

It sounds like a good deal is there is no major rust spots. These cars are old so you know you will have to put in some work, other than that these are very fun cars and you will definitely learn alot.

i would check to make sure the frame rails aren't fuct up.

i see alot of cars that look good until you look underneath.

Ditto on the advice given. Just check everything, particularly underneath for rust (definitely the strut area) and you should be good to go. For 1K you really can't go wrong. Even if things don't work out for you, you could probably sell if for 1K. What color?

Hey everyone, thanks for the tips. I'll be sure to take a closer look for rust and frame damage. As for the color, it's black. Tan leather interior and a sunroof. Couldn't add them before, but I got a few quick pics:

My paint looked like that at one time, you need a hatch, thats typical. Your in Amityville? you dont live in that house do you? if you do does your walls ever bleed and do voices tell you to "get out"?

Haha I live near the house, used to pass it on my bus ride to school. Current owners like to mess with people and put a mannequin in the attic window.

If you're a totally new to cars then an old dsm will give you TONS of experience. Just know that you'll wind up spending thousands replacing every seal and sensor on earth plus the cool mods you actually want to buy. You'll screw up 60% of your projects because you're new and don't know what you're doing. Just warning you ;)

I recently made a similar purchase for around the same money and I think this is a good buy.

If you're keen to learn and do quality work with the right parts, it'll be a good car and teach you alot.
