I was catching up with an old friend who got a DSM not too long ago and I rode around in his car and it was popping and banging, etc etc. I asked him why in the world it was doing that and he told me he tuned it to do that with link. He disabled the idle switch while moving so it would essentially disable fuel cut. And he retarded his timing -5* in low load values. Do you guys think this is harmful? I've heard of kids doing this in their BRZ's etc. but never a DSM

Retarding timing increases EGTs some because combustion is occurring later, but I can't say that I've heard anyone complain that it's enough to be damaging. Also -5 degrees is really nothing. I have mine set to -15 degrees, but I'm black box tuning so I can't disable or add a delay to overrun fuel cut so it's hard to initiate anyway. True antilag is incredibly damaging to the turbo, but they retard the timing so far that combustion happens in the manifold AND they have fuel and air injectors in the manifold to support that combustion.

Ford does this from the factory on the Focus RS and warranties it. Many other manufacturers do this as well. If your turbo is known to be somewhat fragile, (exhasut housing on a 14b, for example) then maybe you shouldn't unless you're prepared to replace it, but I'm not concerned. I have that set up on my GSX and on my Miata and the GT2560R on the Miata takes it like a champ.

The Megasquirt in my Miata, the black box in my GSX, and ECMLink all have timing retard limiters to keep you from being able to retard the timing so far that it blows something up. Unfortunately I can't offer more than a little bit of theory and a little anecdotal evidence, but I'm not concerned about it on my cars.

I don't know if it would hurt anything, but I don't like disabling the idle switch because it raises my rpms to ~1500 after I shift or come to a stop.

Tuning for pops and bangs...

It's official. Everything I know about life is a lie.

The pops and bangs are no problem. Not enough heat there to hurt anything. The egt from the timing needed to run 20psi on pump gas is worse for it than decel pops.

If your idle rises significantly with the throttle closed switch disabled your boss is set wrong.

If you start approaching -20 on a Dsm you can drive exhaust valves into the pistons during antilag, that I can tell you has been known to happen over on the standalone forums, take that for what its worth to you, but I wouldnt exceed -20 degrees on these engines and I probably wouldnt even get close to that number without GOOD aftermarket valve springs.
