First, my 97 GSX is one of the few that has an open rear differential and not the Viscous LSD.

Next, I have been researching LSDs for the last 2 weeks, reading all of the tech articles on here, watching videothe EVO LSD swap threads, threads on the Quaife, the Kaaz, etc. I know how they work, what the benefits are, etc.

I have decided it wouldn't be worth it to swap my open rear diff for a stock Viscous LSD. Seeing as how I live in Socal, rarely drive in rain, snow, etc. and since the VC only seems to lock up once the fluid heats up and transfers. This doesn't seem to give me any real benefits on the track or aggressively driving on the street.

So, I am now looking into swapping to an EVO rear diff inside my open diff housing with my stock rear end gearing. From what I have read I can use my same axles which is a strong selling point to me. My car is a street build, 300hp to the wheels now and I don't ever see the HP going above 350. Right now I use the car for occasional drag racing, canyon carving on weekends, nostalgic driving because I had a GST in high school, etc. and at some point I want to take it to the track for road racing or autox. However, I am looking to maintain the reliability and street-ability of the car.

Here is my question: In searching for EVO rear differentials they seem to be pushing $1,000 used on Ebay or on part out companies like here:

https://www.ebay.com/bhp/evolution-rear-differential

Am I missing something??? I would have thought that a used rear end from an EVO 4-9 would be far less expensive than a brand new LSD from Quaife, Kaaz, etc. Does anyone have any good resources to find an EVO rear diff?

Thanks, Kyle

I saw that rear dif for sale also. Bought a evo2 mani from the same person.

I have no idea what that even is, but I can guarantee you that it's not what you want. Transfer case parts, maybe? AYC parts?
You need one that looks like the link I posted. What I posted is the mechanical rear diff that's in the Evo 1-10, they all look like that, and it's exactly the part you need. No more, no less.

I'd probably make sure that any diff you buy is examined by a competent mechanic. It's not that cheap to rebuild one, and you need to make sure you don't have something that's a total dud.

Very good, thank you for the input. I didn't realize the same mechanical unit was used even in the newer evo's since the description only mentioned EVO 1-3. I just ordered it - will give it a shot! Thanks.

hate to bring open an old tread but I am about to swap a Evo 3 into my non LSD tsi awd.. I bought the lsd... but my question is.. I need new bearings... anyone have the part number I need for 2 new bearings for the rear diff..

Also ammi correct that I need to swap the main ring gear from my open diff to the lsd as I'm putting it in the non LSD housing?

Yes you need to swap your ring gear from your car onto the Evo 3 diff housing. I don't know the part numbers off the top of my head. There is probably a parts number list somewhere on here.

The part number is MB393957. (You need Two) It's the same as DSM.
