A lot has happened since I updated this last. Life has been crazy lately, and time for the car has been slim to none. Wrenching a little here and there, I finally got it all back together. After pulling the head, I got to work knocking out some of the other additions I planned to make to the build.

Once everything was pulled apart, I went ahead and did some cleaning where needed. I also repainted the hot parts, per the usual. If I had to guess, damn near 60% of my time is spent cleaning rather than building...But it's always worth it in the end.

Here's a little before and after of the head. It took the machine shop 2 times to get it right, but it turned out pretty decent in the end. I went ahead and ported the oil passage since I lost some meat from the deck surface.

Since the car was down and apart, it was finally time to put in some of the new parts I've had on the shelf. The big one was a new Quarter Master Gear-Drive 6-leg clutch and flywheel custom spec'd for the car by Tim at TMZ @twicks69. It was a pretty pricey addition, but it's also a pretty nice piece of hardware. A new Mitsubishi TOB and Competition Clutch release fork & pivot ball went in as well.

After much wasted time and ass pain, DSS finally shipped me a new slip yoke. With the addition of all new Torque Solutions motor mounts, I'm hoping the slip yoke will hold out longer than the last one did. Time will tell. I also added a Vibrant resonator in place of my old cat to make some extra room for the DSS driveshaft.

At this point, I've got about 200 miles on the new setup, and so far so good. Now, just need to get back on the dyno, down the 1/4 mile, or on the road course...Or all of the above :sneaky:

That's odd. I've never seen a felpro torch a head like that. I've had some leakers before too LOL. Seem's like maybe it was lean in that hole. I'd suggest having your injectors flowed, and fattening it up a touch.

Pics not working?

Sorry, guys. Should be fixed now. Google used to make hosting images easy :|

Yeah, I think my issue was tune related, coupled with operator error. I wasn't looking at the dash for knock, or logging, but I'm guessing the CEL was telling me to get out of the throttle and I didn't see it until it was too late. I've since pulled some timing out of the map for now. Finding a back country road here in San Diego to do 3rd gear tuning pulls isn't as easy as it once was while I was on the East Coast.

I thought maybe this Cali corn juice may have been weak, but that's definitely not the case.

I didn't get the injectors cleaned, but did remove some goo from the head, and a small bit from the injector tips. I'll probably send them off to get cleaned and flow tested before summer.

Wow, that's good stuff. I don't think I've ever seen it that good in illinois! Right now it smells good, like nice vodka, not really gassy at all, but still showing up at 70% on my FCS. I think I had 78% over the summer

Thanks for the pic of the goo, and all the other pics. If it turns out that your injectors flow test not-good after this short amount of use, I'd be really annoyed. But let us know anyway haha!

Your QM clutch looks great. How does the pedal effort compare with your previous clutch? How would you say it compares in other ways? Your previous was an ACT 2600 I believe?

I decided to take the Galant out to Race Legal in San Diego to test out the new clutch. Finding a place to do test launches in SoCal isn't easy or convenient like it was while I was in Maryland. I wasn't expecting to set any record times, since the 1/8 mile "track" is just a section of parking lot they section off to make runs on. As expected, zero traction out of the hole, but it was definitely fun making passes and hanging out.

I dragged my buddy David along with me, and also got to meet a guy from the Galant board and check out his GGSX. There were some local DSM guys there we got to chat with as well, so all in all, it was a good time.

Pics of the Mitsu stuff, Richard's GGSX, and some video of my first pass of the night:

Looks like some super nice cars there. As always, your car is looking fresh. After that, I think the Conquest was pretty sweet. It almost reminds me of some of the old group B rally cars with those huge, flared fenders. Thanks for sharing :)

Other than that, just been filling up on dirt cheap race gas and driving as much as I can while we still have beautiful weather here in SoCal. It's pretty nice driving it rather than wrenching on it, honestly.

I've been looking through your photos to see if your O2 housing is wrapped, or has a blanket. Looks like no. Is heat-wrapping the O2 kind of not a good idea? I've been thinking about it just to reduce heat to the alternator (in stock position) but kind of chickening out on it. I'm just now finishing up a nice heat shield that will go between the alternator and the hot stuff, to block infrared to the alternator. My exhaust manifold is wrapped. My turbine housing is not wrapped.
What do you think?

I have blankets on the exhaust manifold and turbine housing. My downpipe is wrapped, but not the O2 housing.

Anything you can do to keep heat from getting to the alternator is a good thing.

Ok thanks for the reply.
I drove it yesterday for the first time with the heat shield and "new" NAPA reman 75 amp alternator. Yup, my AL4008X died. Very sad.
Driving it again today. Keeping an eye on the heat shield to make sure it doesn't cause any trouble. I'm going to go for the time being with no wrap on the O2.
Here's kind of a laugh. My zombie alternator still works. I put it back on briefly just to test, as part of the verification that the AL4008X was really dead and not something else. The zombie is a 65 amp NAPA reman that I bought "new" in 2007.

Haven't wrenched on 1837 in months, and honestly I don't miss being under the hood *knock on wood*. Other than a recent alignment and new tires, all I've done is drive it. Took it to MOD, to some cars & coffee meets, local meets, up Palomar Mountain, and a few other places. It's been great simply enjoying the car.

Hey Brett!

Any updates for us? I've really enjoyed reading through this entire build thread! heck, i love reading through all of the well documented build threads from all you seasoned veterans in the DSM world! so much good info and helps inspire others to go do some wrenching!

glad you've got to do more driving than the ladder tho, hope life is still going good for you man!

No updates recently. The car has been down since early November. I had an issue with a caliper coming loose, which damaged my old bracket.

Luckily, @99gst_racer agreed to make some new brackets, which will help me and the community out! So, just waiting on those to get finished up so I can get the car back together.

It's been a while...

Ever since installing my set of Torque Solutions motor mounts in the car, everything wants to come loose all the damn time. Well, back in November of 2018, I had a little issue.
08QrS52HCySNVPqVMiVvniOsQnkqI16XdsK8FCSm_jz4KjbqIF_OsUJ3oCOD9-0YoSnlgjwppygSGOIQIQ=w1112-h626-no.jpg

One of my calipers came loose, and snagged the wheel. Luckily the damage was minimal compared to what could have happened. But, the incident claimed my caliper, line, and worst of all, the custom bracket used to mount the the brake. Due to the unavailability of new adapter brackets, I didn't have any quick options to repair the damage. So, I solicited the help of Paul Volk ( @99gst_racer ) at Volk Metal Craft to hopefully engineer a bracket for myself, and others who want to do the 3KGT brake upgrade in the future. In true Paul Volk fashion, he engineered a new part which exceeded any expectations I could have ever had, and delivered it to me for some final testing.

Shortly after getting the car back in order, I also learned Wheelwell selected the Galant for a feature in Super Street Magazine.

Wheelwell and Super Street had me drive the car 2 hours North to LA, where we did some video takes, and a full photo shoot. The shoot went down in the the Angeles National Forest, where Larry Chen took tons of photos of the car in various spots all up and down San Gabriel Canyon Road. He even got some video behind the wheel driving 1837, which will hopefully be posted on Hoonigan's AutoFocus YouTube channel at some point. Overall, I feel super lucky and humbled to get such an awesome opportunity. Not only did Larry get to spend all day shooting my car, but I'm able to represent the DSM and Galant community to a wider audience of automotive enthusiasts. Hopefully, I'll get some of the final content here in the coming weeks, and be able to share it here. And, if I'm really lucky, we might see 1837 in an upcoming issue of Super Street Magazine. Here are some shots I took that day.

Overall it was an awesome day! The car made the 4 hour round trip, and held up like a boss getting flogged in the canyons all day. Lastly, hats off to Jonathan Mill and Wheelwell for making this opportunity happen!

That is really awesome, and getting those caliper brackets and the horn button custom made is awesome too.

You know I'm pretty concerned about drive train parts lately, mostly safety concern, not very good having drive train stuff breaking on public roads.
Maybe you can give me an opinion about a couple things. Rear differential upgrade / rebuild, and some kind of upgraded rear axles.
Have you ever felt the need for those 2 items? I get some booming sound on trailing throttle - trailing off from cruise at 40-50 mph speeds. Does that mean rear diff shims or bearings or something like that?
