I never do any Autozone anything either LOL.
Taking the old alt into an alternator shop is how I used to do it about 40 years ago.
I like that method, and if I knew more about the shops around here I would maybe try that again. For every good shop there are probably quite a few crappy ones.

With the Saturn relocated alternator setups, do they still use a 4 rib belt which also drives the water pump, like the stock setup does?
There are multiple different pulleys to use but mine is a 4-rib, I believe.

Oh, another thing I forgot to mention:

that ALT needs to BREATHE !

They get hot when generating the backup current for the battery. And if your battery is weak, that ALT is charging all the time and getting super hot, where, pretty soon, out goes the regulator and you got a bad ALT.

keep it clean, by taking it to a car wash and power wash the ALT free of grease and oil..!

...and make sure that air flow can pass through the unit since the fan is on the back of the unit where it pulls air in instead of the Saturn/GM units where the unit pulls air out from the back.

Mitsu had the right idea where they placed the fan in the back so cool air can pass through the unit instead of pulling out hot air with the external fan ones.

Does the same belt also drive the water pump, which then also drives the power steering pump? (like on the OEM setup).

I just looked at your car, it is looking really good. I'm fired up a little after watching a 12 minute video on YouTube "Nihon Nights .... w/ Mad Mike". Some of those cars, so much light on them, wonder what alternators they use LOL.

That's good to know, which way the fan blows haha!
So, when I build my heat shield, I will keep that in mind, and try to shape it so the air moving rearward there is sort of ducted into the back of the alternator.
I do have a lot of air moving there, because on that side of the car, I have a pusher fan in front of the radiator, and a small puller fan behind the radiator.
My heat shield will be metal of course, but I would like to coat the side of it facing the alternator with something that is non-conductive to electricity and to heat. Don't quite know what to use for that coating yet. I will make it so it shields the wires there too. The wires will be close to the heat shield so there needs to be a good insulator on that side of the shield. The other side of the shield will just be reflective, to hopefully block infra red coming from the exhaust parts.
