Long story short, my friend was cleaning oil off of my valve cover while the car was running and the paper towel got sucked into the timing belt. We turned the car off ASAP, got as much towel out as we could and the idle sounded off so I turned the crank until all the timing marks lined up and the cam marks are spot on but the crank is at about 20-25 degrees before tdc. Is this enough offset for the timing to allow valve collision? I don’t remember hearing any crunching or smacking noise at the point when the towel got sucked in but the idle is just sporadic now. Is this enough off timing for valves to get bent? All this after I just got done replacing everything because of a snapped timing belt. It still feels like compression is good when I turned the crank by hand. But I just need some other opinions. Thanks a lot guys.

Why were you running it without a timing belt cover???
Because I literally just got finished putting everything back together and wanted to run it and check for belt slap to make sure I tensioned everything properly. I know I should have put it back on. But do you think it actually slapped some valves by jumping only 25*?

Keep rotating the engine, you may be on a different stroke. Rotate it again to confirm tdc and see how it looks

Set to tdc. Check cams relative to that. Not the other way around. Then you can reset timing at this point. Do what I said and you'll know how far off you are. After it's back in time you can do a leakdown. The 25 degrees you mention isnt relavent if you're talking about how far crank is off when cams are in time. They dont turn at the same rate. You check cams relative to crank so set crank first. My guess is both cams are off 3 teeth or less. From my experience you got a 50 50 shot. Leakdown after you fix it will tell you.

Alright everyone, I appreciate everyone’s input. The car is perfectly fine. Still has the same power as it did before and no ticking from bent valves. Runs smoother than ever. Thank god.

I would not trust no ticking meaning no damage. I would do a leakdown anyway. It's probably fine but peace of mind is better. Visual inspection through the spark plug hole tells a story also

Yeah I plan to rent a compression tester tonight from the 24hr auto zone and get that done tonight. I did some tuning last night and everything checked out. I did some runs with my friends speed three and on the last one the idle started to break up after the pull. But it returned to normal. I think my plugs or ignition system may be on its way out. I did get some knock also. But that’s perusual until I upgrade my injectors. Those are coming this week also.

Not sure where you live in Houston but I just bought a leakdown tester if you want to stop by and check.
I live on the north west side, but I couldn’t swing by unless you’re free late at night because of my job. Like around 11:30.
