Hello everyone, new to the DSM scene again after 8 years and am currently on my way to look at and possibly buy a 97 GSX.
Guy says he has done upgrades, bigger injectors, and AFC2 says it needs tuned and can’t be “driven” until it’s tuned properly.
It starts and runs but I’m a bit Leary of this altogether. Is this normal and does anyone have experience with this sort of issue or have any advice? Please help.
Was wondering if maybe getting DSMlink would help fix this problem or if I should actually take it to dyno/tune?

It is my opinion that anyone using an AFC for tuning and/or says that it needs to be tuned before it can be driven doesn't know what they are doing. That describes two of my four DSMs at the time of purchase so I wouldn't let that completely discourage you, but be especially wary of the mods that have been performed (and also the ones that haven't) and also be sure that the price reflects this dubious condition.

I can't really suggest what to look out for mods-wise without knowing what has already been done, but look at the quality of work done so far. Worm gear pipe clamps on silicone couplers and miscellaneous mismatching hardware are obvious red flags. don't neglect the standard DSM issues. Strut tower rust, rocker rust in front of the rear wheels, all of the fluid leaks, etc.

Don't be afraid to haggle, and don't be afraid to walk away.

DSMLink or a 98+/EVO8-9 ECU would likely solve the problem long-term, but:
1. Don't count on that being the only thing keeping you from driving the car home.
2. Planning to tune the car before driving it home isn't the best of plans. I don't know if that is what you are implying or not.

Thank you!! I wasn’t planning on tuning it before I took it home... just curious what I was getting into. I bought the car. I just hope it doesn’t end up biting me in the ass. Thank you so very much for the response. A lot of hands have been on this car and it hasn’t been treated the way it was born to be treated.
i will be buying a DSMlink ASAP

Hey.. I am also new to the forums AND the DSM scene... I'm a new member all I don't know how to create my own post so I apologize if this is considered "hijacking".. I am looking at a 97 gs-t manual transmission with 127k on it.. the owner says it has been sitting on jacks since 2012.. if I do but it I plan on doing 1-1.5k off the rip for a tune up, replace all the timtu, wires, belts. I'm kind of eager, and the asking price is $3k. Body is in beautiful shape and I am in love with the car. Any advice? And if a mod could move this to where it might belong without deleting, ifI appreciate it, just looking for advice
