Hello I am looking at buying a 96-99GSX and I came across this one. I am not looking to DD this car I am just working for a slow project to work on and learn more about cars. I know it’s an automatic but that’s what I want. Give me honest opinion on the car please I seem to have the worst luck when buying used vehicles LOL. I know this things not perfect but seems like a decent deal. Needs the paint to be fixed on the drivers side door and the airbag on the pssanger side seems to have been warped from heat maybe so not sure how much that is to replace but the strut tower rust doesn’t look bad on it. It also doesn’t run he says it’s the fuel pump but doesn’t seem certain I plan on taking the motor apart anyways.

Non running for 3k? Nope, half that maybe.
Thanks for the reply yeah that’s what worries me, trying to decide if I should just stay patient. It has a decent amount of aftermarket parts that I would probably just take off and sell.

I would stay patient. Since the platform is getting more scarce. Some folks are just trying to bank on the fact it’s an AWD car. Damn that. Good luck on your search

Have you looked at the car in person? I would go check it out and see if you are able to talk to him about the possible problems it has, easiest way to talk him down.

I would go diagnose the car in person (If possible) before taking a sellers word on it. I bought a 2g once that didn't run and going through my checks found an intercooler pipe had popped off, could be something simple.

If that car were around me, I would go there with 2k cash and talk him down to it.

3k is kind of high. I've never paid more than 2k but I look for bone stock. The owner has invested quite a bit and he's merely trying to recoup some of the cost instead of parting out.
As for a project, good call on an auto awd. However any time you buy someone else's project you almost always have to do rework. The fact you want a project to learn on is great, but for your purposes I would recommend waiting to find a bone stock candidate.

Edit: I didn't realize it wasn't running. Definitely no. Ntm int the ad he just says "16G turbo" but he puts the brand name for everything else. Probably a chinese unit. He also still has the crap stock radiator. He modified everything else but couldn't buy a $100 ebay aluminum rad? All the parts visible look beat and def not well cared for.

Not running, 1500 at most. And don't believe that its got parts or has had work done to it that can't be verified by seeing for yourself or receipts with the cars info through a shop and even then. (ie timing belt, fuel pump brand) Be patient, I looked for over 2 years to find mine. Maybe longer, I don't remember.

Definitely don't pay 3k. Though I'm sure that's just his starting price figuring people will low ball offer. I'd offer 1k and see what they say. LOL. At least if its junk you can get your money back flipping it or parting it out.

Honestly, the parts on it are old and inexpensive. I wouldn't take that stuff as a plus at all. A new fuel pump is like $50 so it makes you wonder why the owner didn't just replace it. I would stay away from cars like that unless you're a good mechanic or have lots of extra cash to fix everything.

Also looks to have a 255 fuel pump without a fuel pressure regulator. Honestly its hard to say until you see a car in person. If the body is in good shape and you want a project, I wouldn't mind taking a stab at it for the 2k or under. Start low and work up to the most you are willing to pay.

Thanks for the replies everyone I really appreciate it! I think I’m going to just stay away from it then, I ideally would like to find a completely stock car but that seems to be difficult so I’ll try to just be patient. I live like 8 hours from this car so I don’t think I’ll make the drive to check it out considering all the input from you all. Once again thanks! Going to keep looking.

The transmission is 90% likely to be bad, as said its cheap enough to throw a fuel pump in it and sell it alot easier and for alot more money if it runs than not running/needs flat bedded away, something is rotten on this one.

Thanks again everyone for the responses! I’m going to stay away from the one you all gave me your opinion on and I won’t be looking at that one anymore. But I found this one today! Alright I think I’m going to end up getting this one I’m really liking it, seems clean still have to go look at it though. Has 117k miles on it has a dent in the hood but I have a black one I can replace it with. Says he hit a deer going 15mph oddly enough I believe him but regardless I will be looking very closely at the frame and all the suspension parts up front to make sure there isn’t more damage than is known. New tires on it I guess and $3500. Maybe a little to much for it but I like it and pretty close to home so I won’t have to pay to ship it or fly out there. Here are some pics.

That one look clean and stock, nice find. If the car runs and drives it is worth the $3500. Details on the car? Still auto?

Yup it’s runs fine, no check engine lights and yeah still auto LOL. I’m liking it a lot. I’ll keep you all updated on it, stuck in Japan right now because of this typhoon but when I get home I’ll be looking at it.

That looks like a good candidate, gl!

Thanks! Yeah I like it from the pictures will post more when I go and see it.

I am the owner of the Magenta Gray Pearl 97 GSX discussed in this post. Can any of you kindly point me in the right direction to changing out the fuel pump.

I am pretty sure the fuel pump needs to be replaced. I say this because I replaced the battery and it doesn't start. Turns over but not starting. You can hear it wants to start. I pulled the back seat and I don't hear the fuel pump doing anything when I start it. I made sure the fuel pump was getting power by running a jumper wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the fuel pump and still nothing. I just haven't had the time/chance to pull the pump. All fuses are good and the fuel pump relay appears fine too.

Is it possible to change the pump without getting under the car? I am not very skilled under the hood, so I just want to make sure I am not taking on something too far outside of my skill set. But I would like to get the car started so I can sell it. I am certainly not looking to screw anyone.

Thanks for you time. Perhaps I will post this question in another forum here, but I wanted to respond since this is my car.

I don't think you have to get under the car to change the pump. It's actually a pretty easy thing to do regardless of experience. I would check the fuses on the battery because there might be a fuel. Does the car have stock or custom wiring to the fuel pump?

I checked the fuses and they all checked out. It has stock wiring. When my buddy installed the Walbro many years ago I was going to do the re-wire, but never got around to it. Wiring I can do.

Even when I run a wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the fuel pump test connector under the hood, the pump didn't make any noises. And I confirmed with a light tester at the wire harness by the pump that there was power there when I connected the wire from the battery to the test connector.

see if it runs on starting fluid for a few moments......if it does then make sure you have the right wrenches to deal with the pump hanger line out........even still it might be frozen pretty good. As a last resort, Vice grips on the pump hanger end rocked down good, and the proper (17mm?? been awhile) flair nut wrench on the rubber hose end have worked out.......just make sure you unhook the rubber hose under the car too, the ends do not spin. Both ends of the rubber hose must be disconnected. So you do have to go under the car, but only for that.
