I recently just finished my awd swap, using a kiggly 6 bolt in 2g auto kit. I installed it correctly, with the flexplate concaving towards the engine. On startup, i hear the torque conerter bolts hitting somethig and metal flakes flying out of the bell housing. Took the starter out, it is completly destroyed. No more teeth, and part of the starter itself was groud away. What the f&#k is going on?

90 6 bolt block
Kiggly kit
95 awd auto trans with awd converter
2g torque converter bolts
New pilot bushing
Used 2g awd auto starter plate as well

Install washers between the starter and adapter plate. The starter is pushed in too far into the adapter plate and is grinding on the converter and teeth. Yours is worse off than the GVR4 pneumo and I did @FFTec. The GVR4 only needed a couple washers to space it out (away from the converter).

If everything is put together correctly with the correct parts, he should not have to put washers to space anything out.

OP are you using the correct starter? You never stated which starter you are using. Do you have the oem flex plate spacer installed?

Think thisnis resolved guys. Threw in another starter today without using washers as stated above and no metal to metal contact. I think the starter wasnt diengaging. I want to leve the thread open though as i might run into more problems with test&tuning it.

I am having a similar issue did you ever figure it all out? It seems like the starter isn’t strong enough to turn he motor over and at one point the motor felt almost as if it was crank locked until I was finally able to spin her freely. I even waited to set timing until motor was installed and bolted to converter with starter to make sure it spun freely. Starter really seems to be the problem but still not sure...???

I just went through this process. Not sure why you set timing in the car when you could have easily done it on the engine stand to rule out the possibility of setting the timing wrong and hitting valves or anything else that could not be right. Did you rotate the engine after the timing belt installation before you hooked up the trans???
Also is your car a GST or gsx? I had to get all 4 wheels off the ground due to AWD and the wheels spinning when I turned the crank pulley (while in neutral) to get to the converter bolts.
Once bolted I spun everything to make sure it didn't bind up anywhere THEN installed the starter. No issues and fires right up.

What was your process of installation?

Edit: I had to replace my battery due to the car sitting for 3 months before the engine install. I had very slow and poor cranking...

Is your battery good?

Ok so not trying to sound rude but I have been working and tuning these cars for a long time I’m 31 and have had my original 99 Gst with 6bolt swap since I was 14 and did the swap way before ECM link or any plug and play adapters ever existed. I just haven’t been on here over the years. I own Nemesis Performance LLC in tarpon springs Florida and this is the first 6bolt swap I have ever done on a 98 Eclipse gst Spyder Automatic. I have done the timing in while the engine is in the car on many cars many times and know the process well to make sure there are no errors. But first thing first is when approaching this job for a friend after blowing his 7bolt we dove into the process of 6bolt right away. After getting 1g stock flywheel and different converter I mated the engine to the transmission and knew something was wrong instantly because the engine would not spin freely with the starter installed. Now know that all of this is being done with the tranny in the car. So that’s when I realized we needed the kit from kiggly. So out came the motor again!!!Anyway after getting the kit and installing it per the instructions provided I wanted to make sure the motor spun freely with the new flywheel and starter installed before I bottoned everything up again. Motor spun freely no problem. That’s when I set the timing and did my 6 rotations and came back 15 min latter to check tension with grenade pin. After putting the whole car back together I go to start it and the starter sounds like it’s just poppin up and clicking with no engagement. I’m like WTF I go to spin the motor and it’s tough so tough I pull the starter to see if I’m having this same problem again. Same thing really tough. Finally I get the motor to spin after easy pulling and pushing and I’m good. I reinstall the starter and the motor tries to start then starts the same clicking. Yes I tested the starter before install. I got out of the car and check to see if the motor locked again and nothing she spun like butter...Now I’m not sure if the starter got swapped with maybe a 3000 GT Vr4 5 Speed starter since the car was down for a couple months due to a complete build and we had Parts close to others. But that is what is going on. I’m going to get a new starter for the 98 gst Spyder and hopefully the length of engagement is different or something....

Which starter did you use? I’m getting info saying M/T starter should be used because if length and shim difference.?

Because it's still binding with the starter removed, I don't suspect that it is a starter-related issue.

It's hard to tell from the pics, but are you sure that the torque converter is fully seated in the trans? From the looks of it, you've got a Sinister Racing TC in there... I had to rotate & lightly "bounce" mine a few rotations before it was fully seated

No sir it’s not binding anymore it was the first time by now spins freely with no noise what so ever.I believe I’m using the wrong starter. TC is installed per spec 3 rotation drop no room for finger tips behind and gaped perfect after bolting to flywheel. I’m reading up that I’m suppose to have a M/T starter installed hopefully that is my problem

I used the auto starter. You can only use auto starters on auto cars. They are not interchangeable with the 5 speed units. It's a very common mistake but at least it's a easy fix if you catch it early.

Jimmy is correct, I had to use an auto starter for proper engagement. If you were using an auto before, buy a new one and make sure you have proper voltage/grounding to the starter. I've had a starter "test" good out of the car but wouldn't start the car, swapped for a known good and she fired right up.

i have a 5spd starter on my auto and havent had any issues with it since the swap two years ago. seems like 2g's just have to be more complicated

I didn't realize you were FWD. I don't understand needing to shim the starter further away if the manual is shorter to begin with. You are already pulling the starter further away using the kiggly spacer plus the separator. I've had my auto starter in for 3 years and have never had a problem. Maybe your starter is just bad?
