hey y'all my tranny is shot, thinking it's the input shaft but I was wondering maybe what's the most optimal transmission to replace the stock one with? I want it to handle power no problem for the future but I also don't want to break the bank on a dog box or something like that... I still want to daily the car.. I heard the Evo 2 trans will work seeing as how it's on the same engine and the gearing is the same throughout all the gears, but will it bolt right up or will i need custom fabrication for mounts, etc? I'm very new to this but the transmission said it was time to go now so that's what we're jumping into haha! thanks for taking the time to hear me out sorry if I wasn't clear enough, ask me any questions I'll try to keep the thread updated.

I have an EVO 2 transmission. I could take pictures and measurements if you need any, I however don't know the differences between the two, someone else maybe?

You don't always have to go all out with transmission builds. You could easily upgrade a few key things and have a good clutch and it may last forever or as long as you need it too.

Well, you will need to change your axles to AWD axles for both sides, change the shift selector/lever assembly that is in the transmission as the lever arm is different, and you will have to do a FWD conversion on the transmission with a welded center diff and then remove the output shaft and then epoxy in a 45mm freeze plug into the bellhousing since you are not using the output shaft. As well, change out the speedometer sensor on the transmission to the 2g gst transmission.

The final drive is different and the gear ratios are different.

By no means is it a direct bolt in, but it is a nice transmission if you do the conversion properly.

I did a 2.4 transmission swap on my GST Spyder, I couldn't find a good working FWD trans so I did that instead...best swap I ever did short gear shifts and I love it!!! Had to change the axles though...but the 2.4 was lighter then gst by a few pounds

I see... with that being said, do you think fixing the DSM transmission would be the most cost-effective way to get it back on the road? I don't plan on throwing any power at it until she's healthy and happy again. The only problem is I don't know exactly what is wrong with the trans.

So the DSM trans handles power without issues? I don't think i'll be pushing much more than stock anytime soon though

No worries, I will have to modify the Evo transmission because my car is FWD so I think that is a bad idea at the time. thanks for hearing me out

did you have to fab up any transmission mounts or anything like that? I think i'd be capable of pulling the trans and swapping it with a working one but not much more than that... I don't have a garage but i do have a driveway and jackstands

Absolutely, fwd trans aren't very expensive either, at least not in Utah, they are very common here and go for as little as 50$.

If you're going to stay stock for a while, repair seems like the best option IMO

I see. Now comes the task of finding what's wrong with the transmission so i can buy parts to fix it! :barf:

If you are in Kokomo, there are several pick and pull's near you that COULD have one. They will be specific only to 1995-1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T and Eagle Talon TSI FWD applications.

Otherwise, here is a factory service manual for taking apart the transmission -

As well, contact Ricky Nichols here - He has a 2G GST 5-Speed trans for sale.

twicks69 I can not express my gratitude enough to you for taking the time to drop this huge knowledge bomb on me. Thank you. If you don't mind, do you think a 2.4 swap would be better than rebuilding the original DSM trans, like @bduran1220 said?

edit: seriously, thank u

Clutch PP CMC flywheel speed sensor front hubs trans mounts ARE the same from 2.4 to GST i just needed 2.4 5spd transmission and 2.4 5spd c.v. axles...i never had a trans problem going 7yrs running
Wow I think this might be a very possible option for me... so the 2.4 is beefier? I figured the DSM trans would be built for turbo applications and would be better. Like I said though I am a total car noob xD so bear with me. I know y'all don't know everything but which option do you think would be cheaper here? which one would be easier? I have very very limited resources and time for working on my baby, not trying to sound like a lazy scrooge

The 2.4L non-turbo F5M31 is actually a weaker transmission, but it works just fine. The 4G63 turbo FWD 5-speed F5M33 transmissions are more durable. As well, the 2G FWD F5M33 uses 27-spline front diff input stubs, the F5M31 2.4L non-turbo trans is 25-spline if I recall, hence the axle swap needed.

I've ran my 2.4 trans hard BRO when I 1st did the swap...it doesn't seem weaker to me...if anything she toke off even better then before. 25 spline over a 27 spline that what I meant by it being lighter because the hub wheel bearings are all the same even for AWD DSM I think it's good option buying a really good condition used/wrecked 2.4 trans then. Buying an abused GST trans that grinds on shifts and probably having to do the work again every thing aligns up with even toke my car to a wheel alignment done a few times over the years they didn't say anything about it...shes within spec and she's on Ground Control coilovers/Tokico illuminas
