Okay so i have a 1999 eclipse gs spyder that i bought recently. One morning i started it up and the balance shaft belt completely snapped in half and now i have a massive oil. I was gonna replace the belt then started reading that many people actually drive with it off so if thats true whats could be causing the leak. Fron what i see its leaking from where the belts are.

Your car is a gs? Non turbo correct. Yes some people drive without balance belts but I think it still involves removing the balance shafts and blocking off oil passages. I would investigate cause of belt breaking. Is oil soaking and caused it to slip and break. Have you/can you remove the timing lower cover? Oil could be leaking up higher and run down. Like I said I would figure out where the oil is coming from and what caused the belt to snap before I replaced/bypassed anything. Thank you for your time, Jason Penny

Yes its a gs so the 2.4L engine 4G64
And i mean some people litterally drive without the belt claiming is only to quiet vibrations. If thats the case how could mine breaking cause a massive oil leak i believe it broke from not being change the entire had been sitting for quite a while. Oil had been splashing all on the right side of the engine where the belts are and even hitting the top of the hood since it broke. All the belts are soaked from the oil leaking snd splashing. And yes the cover is removed

While people do drive without the Balance shaft belt, it still involves removal of the balance shafts. You can't just disconnect the belt and call it a day, too many rotating parts inside and it will definitely cause damage, hence your massive oil leak.

Incorrect. Something else is damaged. Disconnecting a belt will not cause an oil leak. You can run it this way. You may not like how it vibrates but it won't hurt anything

I thought the balance shaft belt was jus to quiet vibration. I believe when it broke it could have broken the crankseal behind the timing belt. Seeing how the oil pump is run off the timing belt.

Is it possible that when the belt broke it could have damaged the crankseal behing the timing??

The balance shaft belt spins the front balance shaft, which in combination with the rear shaft (spun along with the oil pump) helps to reduce engine vibrations and increase driver comfort. The fact that they're only there for driver comfort is why many enthusiasts choose to remove them as it removes a potential point of failure with a second belt that can damage timing components if it were to break. Removal, however, does not just involve removing the belt as the rear shaft would still be spinning and throwing the vibrational balance within the motor way out of whack.

That being said, the lack of the belt is not the cause of your oil leak. It is extremely possible that it could have damaged an oil seal. You need to get the timing cover off and properly inspect the surrounding areas for any damage that may have been caused.

I hate to run off subject but this did happen to me also. The balance belt did not break it just stripped all the teeth off maybe I got lucky but theres was no damage to any seals just took out the crank sensor and killed motor. Please take the advise given by many, if u have the ability to get timing cover off and take detailed pics. Thank you for your time Jason Penny

I do not agree with some other posters. I doubt you damaged a seal. Doesn't really matter though as you are going to need to remove the covers and inspect.

I've seen accessory belts shred and wreak all sorts of havoc, hence why I'm not going to rule out the possibilities.

The one thing we can all agree on is that the timing cover needs to come off in order to diagnose it. Until that happens, we're going nowhere with this thread.

Alright heres the update i found the leak and fixed it (oil pump seal) seen oil which looked like it came from the exhaust manifold gaskets so i replaced the valve cover gasket last night. Started it up this morning (it has the infamous lifter tick).
Well i drove it litterally around the block it wouldnt go pass 2rpm or 20mph. And then it died turning the key while holding the clutch does absolutely nothing doesnt even click. FML

Are you sure you had it timed and tensioned correctly?

Now i feel completely dumb as shit i didnt do my own timing i allowed someone else to do it. I jus looked at the timing marks......the cam was way off. How likely is it that the motor is fried
