My GF has a 1999 2g Eclipse that is her baby (Bought New). I'm a beginning mechanic so she won't let me touch it. Anyways her mechanic is doing an engine swap on it. While removing the bad one he was beating on the axle enough to mushroom the spines. So he cut axle where there will no longer have a cotter pin to hold the axle nut. I say get new or used axle-PERIOD no question. He said he can just use lock tight and it will be fine. Please help as I'm being looked at as being defiant. With quote being added I'm not a mechanic don't question those who know. If I'm wrong OK lesson learned, I just want safety first. Thanks in advance for any advice!!!

Replace the axle.

Lots of red flags fly up with this mechanic if that's what he's planning to do. If he screwed up the axle, he should replace it anyway for his own reputation!

I would agree having him pay for a new or used axle. Do not run that axle. You don't hammer against the axle like that. You can put the stock nut on flush and hit against the nut.

Me too. New axle (or replace the cup at least). GF needs to reassess her opinion on "mechanics". From your judgement on this axle situation, you may be the better choice.

What did your GF authorize for repair when her machanic called to inform her of the axle problem & his recommended solution? No call, he should pay for the replacement part(s).

This machanic sounds like someone who would take shortcuts to save a buck. Sound like you need to micro manage this person. I'd request all old parts be returned along with a complete itemized repair bill.

any time a guy brings me his GFs car to fix and tells me a story similar to yours, every single time, the mechanic that fuct up the car ends up being the GFs ex

Thanks to everyone for the advice. A note to clarify.... I didn't take the GF's car to anyone, I just disagreed with the person who was working on it. I only pulled new engine from donor car.
