So I just got a 1g laser awd 6 bolt. The water pump went bad on me when I was driving it home after I purchased. Sucks but o well.

So I got everything done and I am setting tension on timing belt. When I set the tensioner pulley the 2 holes are around 12 o'clock and 2 o'clock, maybe a little further. Is this a sign that the pulley cant be reused? Or maybe the belt is stretched too far? all components have less then 2k miles on them which is why I reused them.

As of now I have proper tension on belt as the grenade pin can be pulled out and put back in easily, but like I said the pulley is passed what vfaq says to turn to. I have done them on my 2g couple times no issues but always use new parts as they where changed for 1 reason or another around 20k+ miles.

thanks for the help, google has nothing on this that I have found.

the pulley itself spins freely no binding. My worry is that the 2 holes you use on the pulley one hole is at 12 o'clock and the second hole is at 2 o'clock. (ill try to get a pic)

In vfaq the picture shows around 9-10 o'clock and 11-12 o'clock.

my pulley just goes further then what it says on vfaq that all. no problems with turning. everything times back up after rotating the motor back to tdc.

im sorry i said that wrong, bearing is fine. no worries with that

it is how far I need to turn to tighten the belt to proper tightness.

Here is a pic of how it sits. I don't think i have an issue but just want to make sure. Not trying to rebuild a new motor.

Thank you i kinda figured that just didn't want to ruin a new motor. Wasn't trying to cheep out just ordered balance shaft belt pulley instead of timing belt. And BS are deleted. Thanks for that post

Sweet thank you for that

Just preload the pulley enough to pick up the slack from the timing. Not all Hercules mode, snug is ok the hydraulic tensioner will take care of the rest.
I disagree with this statement. There is an objective measurement on the tensioner and a specific procedure to check it. Follow those procedures. Measure the protrustion of the tensioner and check against OEM specs. This is only correct way by OEM standards.

That statement is exactly what made me decide I would never trust another person to replace a timing belt.

I have nightmares of mechanics using a needle nose pliers to rotate the pulley

Tension is exact. It is not a loosey goosey thing that doesn't matter. It takes patience and checking the resting slack after the specified number of crank revolutions

THIS! tension setting is not a guessing game. Its objective and measureable.
