I’m looking for information on how all of you are cooling these automatic transmissions. Are you using a cooler in a radiator, external, or both? What external and where are you mounting it. What fan works good with the cooler you’re using?

My son's 97 runs it in the SMIC location with a 8" fan (I think). I THINK its a B&M cooler but he is out of town this weekend so I cant ask for sure. We use the cooler in the radiator also. I have a 1gb that will get the same setup eventually. Cools great!
I think he runs a cheap fan. I personally would run a SPAL as I like the way they perform. His is in a puller setup.
If you still have the side mount then you can run it on the drivers side, same location. They don't HAVE to mount flat, my oil cooler is at a 45*, so you have options.

I’m going to have a custom radiator built for my car so I can have a tranny cooler included. That’s a good idea putting the external cooler in the old SMIC location. I think I’ll put the tranny cooler and fan on one side and then an oil cooler and fan on the other side.

I run a large B&M cooler with Mishimoto 8" fan in the SMIC location with a second cooler mounted in front of radiator on the passenger side. I have SPALS best 12" puller behind it which pulls enough air to cool the trans and engine.

I don't have one of the SMIC cooler but here is the one mounted in front of the radiator:

Cool, thanks. Since you didn’t mention it, I’m guessing your not using one inside the radiator.

No, I don't like that setup as the radiator would actually heat up the transmission fluid to your coolant temp. I am trying to run my trans around 170 so I didn't want the added heat.

Reason I added a second is for the auto stall up at the track which adds a ton of heat. Keeping the temp down on 90+ track day is always the challenge so now it shouldn't be a problem. Another obstacle are long freeway runs with the aftermarket torque converter as it doesn't have lock-up so the converter is always slipping creating heat.

Im just finishing up my coolers install! I should have data in a few weeks after logging temps as i want to keep an eye on trans temps of course, mine is the long tru cooler 15,000BTU version mounted in the stock SMIC location. Gets flow of air from the stock opening in the bumper. No plans for fans as after around 30mph fans are pointless anyway and its not a daily so dont sit around for long

I'm running external b&m just like stm cooler
Kit but pieced mine together and saved almost 100 bucks from stm. I still need to get a fan for it though
