Does anyone out there still make lexan windows for a 2g. I've been google searching and haven't found much. Off topic a bit but, I'd like to also drop maybe 4-500 lbs from my awd tsi. It's not going to be a street car except on my trips to the drag strip. I found a few articles on weight reduction and gave been reading those. Would lexan windows be necessary to reach my goals?

There are no direct bolt-in windows. You would have to get a curved piece from Optic Armor and then cut it to shape, then make reinforcement bracketry to fit it in and hold it from pulling away since the 2G doesn't have a window frame.

It is a real PITA.

Hey Tim, why are the reinforcements needed for the Optic Armor pieces, assuming you attach the base to the door securely? Are the 1/4" thick door windows not able to hold their curvature?

You can talk to Cory or Emery at STM...I know they had a small run of molded polycarb window sets done for 2G DSMs. Cory may still have a set...

Uh, teach us your ways sensei. Seriously, no sarcasm :)

Here's a start to what I did:

-Carbon doors
-Carbon hood
-Carbon hatch
-Removed sunroof assembly, epoxied carbon roof glass in place
-No ABS, PS, Cruise
-One Kirkey seat, no pad
-5 gallon aluminum fuel cell
-Chromoly rear subframe
-Removed every unnecessary nut/bolt
-Bumper exhaust
-Remove every bit of wiring not needed to run the car
-Lightweight wheels/slicks
-Remove all sound deadening from the inside
-Remove antenna
-Remove windshield wiper assembly/motor
-My interior is literally a steering wheel, seat, gauges and a shifter

I could still pull even more out of it. The car still has stock brakes, and glass (like I mentioned). I could also have a front subframe made and tube the front for some more weight reduction. The car also has a 10-pt mild-steel (8.50 ET certed) cage and a parachute. Without the fuel, sunroof plug, or parachute on it, I weighed it in at 2385 lbs on STMs corner scales as a 5 spd car. It weighed 2425 with fuel, chute, laptop, etc on the scale at Summit a couple of Shootouts ago. Note: these weights are without me in it.

If you don't mind a noisy, uncomfortable car...you too can be light!

I found a few threads on weight reduction. It seems that a lot can be done without switching to poly windows. My talon isn't a "street" car build but it will be driven to and from the track and maybe occasionally through town. Who needs creature comforts anyway?

Sounds like a plan LOL

I'm more concerned with weight balance, especially since I'm FWD. So a lexan windshield would help quite a bit to shift some of that weight back and make it easier to corner balance.

John freund.. I asked my brother about this and he said he doesn't run Windows at all in any of his AER cars. Says they do it that way to run the nascar style door bars into the door itself to make it easier to get in and out of.

They basically just cut the whole middle area of the door away.

My point is, for what you do. Is glass or alternative required in the doors?

Your brother is correct, if you cut out the inside frame of the doors about 3 IN all the way around, your door will weight 18lbs, the same as a carbon fiber door and you will save a bunch from what I understand that is what the C/F doors weight, run an alumminun angle vertically about half way and from there attach whatever to your door opening mechanisin and you will save more weight.

I really doubt it's to fit door bars and more because regulations require no closed windows for safety. No windows is an aerodynamic mess but rules make it a requirement sometimes. My ruleset doesn't allow closed windows (and so you might as well lose them for weight) unless they are an option from the factory. However I've learned some people have somehow lobbied to get exceptions because Porsche cup cars are being allowed to use closed lexan windows. That's where my interest comes from.

Most if not all SCCA classes do not allow window glass.
The reason for the bars going into the door opening is for safety as they are further away from you in case of impacts and they are stronger.they also allow a little more elbow room.
Porsche and also Lambos, they build a small sliding opening onto the lexan window
Glass in windows are a hazard.

Here is my buddy's car with Nascar bars in it. His doors are gutted. Trying to find 1G side windows with sliders. Might have to have a race shop make em custom.

If I didn't know better, I'd think you copy and pasted from my lightening! LOL Mine is about 90lbs heavier. I have 2 kirkeys and a 10g cell.

Just goes to show you that it works! I’m interested to see how much weight I put back on since switching to auto.

If anyone else see's this thread and wants a rear window or sides i got this company to make mine and got others involved also, this is not plugging because i made nothing out of this! Just wanted to help everyone out here and its top quality and fitment is spot on! Much better then optic armours and its zero trimming needed! https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/2...formed-poly-carbonate-window-1-window.525273/
