First off, I know this is a DSM forum and there might be some preference but I'm still undecided on what to buy, 99 GSX or EVO 8/9/X. I am looking to spend about 15k in total (over the years) including the car.

This build would be a weekend car with few trips to the track a year. I have always loved DSM's and their huge potential, and understand they need maintenance, but have heard and read their questionable when it comes to reliability.

EVOs are newer and also have a huge potential, but more expensive to mod.

I can either build up a bad ass DSM or buy a stock or semi modded EVO and wait years to mod it.

Any suggestions.

DSM all the way, cheaper to mod and just has a certain cool factor that despite how many times I have tried, I just can't reproduce with an EVO (most will say I am nuts for saying this, but it is just the way I feel).. :idontknow: :hellyeah:

I think you just answered your question right there. If you like to build and tinker then a DSM is for you. If you like to have a sick wheel offset, then go evo.

Im a fan of Evo's a little more personally. But thats probably because my first car was a lancer ralliart(not an evo by far but in the family). BUT I also love a good DSM. But you could always do what I did and get a Galant VR4 :D

That was my original thought but finding one in decent shape is hard.

Got kids? Evo/ gallant vr4. I'll be shopping for something fun with 4 doors as soon as my house nonsense gets figured out. I love the GSX but god is it a pain to get a carseat back there. otherwise whatever you like best

Just gotta keep an eye out. I picked mine up for 2900. It has a good number of miles on it, but the body is super clean and the interior is extremely clean for its age. Only complaints on interior is a small rip in driver seat and the steering wheel has seen better days. Damn thing has a smoother ride than any other car ive had somehow haha.

19gsx91 is right. If you have kids you need 4 doors. This is the reason I need to sell my 98 GSX now. It's a not easy getting kids in and out. If you don't have kids or have another car, DSM all the way.

DSM for the win! Its a FUN car not a family car. Build it and have fun with it. My 02. :)

Get a dsm if you can. They are better in all the ways.
Except for parts availability and age.

You can always get a 1991-92 Galant VR-4 if you need 4 doors, though finding a good one might be tough. Those are essentially the same as an Eclipse/Talon/Laser with a different body and interior. The chassis is largely the same and all the same upgrade paths apply, which means it can be a fast car.

The problem is the availability with these cars. Many have been parted out over the years because sellers can get more for them that way, which puts more of them in the crusher every year. It's getting harder to find parts which means you'll need to be good at fabricating, or know someone who is.

But they are fun cars and relatively cheap performance.

Remember safety. I think there's a side crash test rating of a 2g somewhere on YouTube and it ain't pretty. Evo I suppose is safer for your child. I used to not care much about safety but no one expects to get in a car crash. Being laid up for weeks wouldn't be cool. Or worse. Not to be too gloom and doom but probably go the Evo route if you have kids. And because the car seat thing.
