Not sure if this is posted in the correct section, but I figured it would be a good idea to start a thread on anyone wanting to run e85 (like me) and concerned about maintenance. I know there are tons of threads on e85, but I think this would be very helpful and organised instead of having to read through a ton of pages and posts.

So, to start, we know e85 can cause some serious build up. If anyone can give any real-world maintenance advice on how to keep your e85 fuel system up and running efficiently, please provide the info. It would greatly help people like me. Thank you!

I also run the 6 micron fuelab filter. They are not cleanable like the Stainless ones. The big difference really is the particle size. Both are compatible with ethanol.

I don’t remember seeing anything documented with the paperwork I got when I got it. I just sent them an email asking about replacement intervals for the fiberglass element. The 3” element is ~$34 replacement so hopefully it’s not too often. Mine is only about a year old now. I will report back with what I hear from them.

Main reason I went with the 6 micron is because of the age of the car and the initial “cleaning effect” of e85. Though I can say I have yet to see anything in my fuelab filter... so a 40 micron should be plenty.

We should filter down to 5 microns according to the Injector Dynamics essay. 40 micron sized particles will mess with your fuel system.

Yeah pretty much I run a wix replacement filter and run 9s. Leave fuel in it for months at a time. Been doing it since 08, killed 2 Wally 255s, and I think I have one fic750 getting down on flow. All stock fuel lines hoses regulator. I buy e85 at sketchy truck stops, shit hole gas stations, whereever. I treat it like it's normal gas and don't care. I've had 1 bad tank E45, and I knew it when I bought it. Could tell by the smell. Never lost a motor due to lean outs or bad fuel. It's really not a big deal just gotta use your head.

do a thread about making one

Run a half a tank of gasoline through it every few tanks or once a month depending on how much you drive it. I've had e85 running through rubber lines for years and haven't seen any negative affects yet but then again, I can't see the inside of every hose. If you don't have the ethanol sensor installed (great investment) just pull your injectors every couple months to check for the "goo", send them in to be cleaned if it is excessive. I build a fuel injector cleaner at home that I was able to run injector cleaner/gasoline through them when removed which is another option rather than sending them in every time.

I actually had one injector become stuck shut by the goo last year. This was before I installed the ethanol sensor to be able to run gasoline through it.

People over complicate E because they don't know.

Use SS fuel filters
No unanodized aluminum anywhere...yes the OEM rail will fail. Ethanol is a cancer for bare aluminum.
It can sit for a long time, it's fine, does it accumulate water, sure but you aren't racing in Feb anyways....so.
My fav wives tail is the change in content from station to station, ha... air temps make a bigger change in a tune than that. Yes it does change spring/fall.... but even that isn't always true. Test your regular station content and see what they are throughout the year, but once it's summer/winter it stays that way, besides the tune barely even changes between E70 and E85. I make no real tune changes between the two other than a tiny fuel global tweek (6 I think), and I might bump boost down a bit if you were running 40+psi, don't even touch timing.

Been running E year round for what ....since it was invented.

I forgot I do run the Lucas ethanol treatment to cut down on the black goo on injector tips which does help, the stuff is cheap and 1 bottle last me about a season.

Maybe I am not cautious enough, but I just throw some fuel treatment that is E85 compatable in before winter and leave the E85 in it. No problems doing it this way for the last 4 years or so. Every few fill ups I will throw a bottle of sea foam into the gas tank and let it run through the system. Seems to cut through the injector goo pretty good when I have cleaned them outside of the car so I assume it does the same in the tank.

The first 2 years I was on stock lines and a stock fuel filter with E85. When I took the filter off (after 2 years of E85) I cut it open and it looked brand new damn near. I have since upgraded to a PTFE SS feed line and a summit racing 10 micron filter. No issues with either set up.

Hey guys, I figure this original thread of mine is a suitable spot to post this question. Years ago, I purchase the fuelab 515 afpr kit from extremepsi. My future goal is to run e85 (hence, this thread) and I figured I'd ask:

Being that some say e85 will chew through rubber, does anyone know if the ss hose that comes with this kit is okay to run with e85? Because, for all I know, it could just be rubber hose inside and not "teflon coated". Will I be safe with this or no?

Bringing it back LOL
Snow fell early where I'm at and I washed and waxed the car already for winter. I don't want to drive it on the salty roads and was considering this for storage...
I have -AN fitting and braided lines, and ID1700's. I would disable the fuel pump, run it till it stalls to clear the rail and injectors, then pull the fuel feel line from the rail and force the pump on to drain the fuel tank into a bucket. Then Hook the line back up to the rail, pull my Billet dual pump hanger out of the tank, set that in a bucket full of non oxy 93 and run the car for a few minutes. put the sending unit/pump back in the tank, bag off the fuel tank vent and cap and let her sit. fill it back up with fresh e85 next spring. Does this sound reasonable? I let it sit all last winter with e85 and just sealed off the tank, never had any issues.
