Seals are beat up and look like they been jacked up on so expect splits in the frame there, its fixable but will take some time and skill to do it right and well. I would not oay that much for that,

Dont forget to check inner wheel wells and strut towers, they also rust out a bit also.

Iv got pictures from under the hood and the towers look like they are in good shape. Iv not had a chance to see under in the wheels

Maybe I’m just not looking in the right place. I’d love to have a decent 2nd gen gst or gsx for around 4000

Someone just posted up pics a few days that were a lot worse than that, but, there's definitely a few areas of concern there, as mentioned above. 2 additional questions for you - how many miles? and do you plan to garage keep the car? Both those questions would play into my willingness to take a risk on the car at that price point.

There are a lot of things to consider besides the rust. If its driving good, not in need of everything under the sun, and has a clean body/interior, the rust can be overlooked, title clean? It doesn't look to deep to me. I'm sure some areas are worse than others, but that surface rust is pretty normal. Check the important areas others have mentioned. But for a 2G GSX, that's not a bad price. Most sellers ask for more, so the low price would be a little concerning to me, the seller knows there are reasons it's not worth that much.

Yeah I remember seeing holes in the shock towers posted on Facebook. I've seen worse rust damage but it was concentrated harder on the shock towers. The underside looks acceptable though

I'm down south, to me the car is still savable. Your 4k budget isn't going to get you anything better and it is a complete car. So I would consider it a good investment in a dsm. Should you get serious into the foot fetish that is dsm ownership you can transfer parts to a cleaner shell.

If it's still a bone stock except for the exhaust thats a high price IMHO. I never paid more than $2500 or blue book for an awd DSM. I passed up an identical GSX for $3000 a few months ago because of similar rust but also in one of the rockers (rust spots love to hide under the side skirts until your jack pops through) and underside of the strut tower.
I'd look into why the splash shield in the last pic is apparently wet. That's a common place to see a leak from the lower timing belt cover or ofh.

I agree and by the time you do build your perfect GSX when shopping for that clean shell my prediction is there gonna cost a lot!

Five years ago it would have been considered a waste of time to AWD swap a gst, now its getting more common to scrap a falling apart gsx because it's easy to find a rust free fwd shell

It doesn't look too bad IMO. I always pay attention to jack stand damage on the frame rails and pinch welds underneath the car. 2gs are bad from improper jack placement damage. Also, as already mentioned, look closely to the strut towers and wheel wells for rust. Remember surface rust is tolerable and fixable but cancer rust is a pain in the ass and I usually like to steer away from it....

That makes sense

What are the modifications that are required of the body ?

Do you mean if the GST body to make it into a GSX?

Not much to the body itself. Have to swap rear sub frames, gas tank, and driveshaft mounts which requires welding. Yiu do have to cut the gst body a little bit to drop in sub-frame bolts, but it's not that hard. I'm on the midst of this swap right now myself.

Hey I was just looking at the pictures that car is actually very clean I’d considered the pictures you should to be normal; a condition that can be easily maintenance.

Rust is part of life the trick is careing and matianing it.

When you pay a toll to cross a bridge bet you didn’t know most of the money goes to constantly repainting it combat rust.

Same thing when you join the navy you sign up then you find out your real job is constantly repainting the ship so it doesn’t rust a way
