I am looking at a Eagle Talon Tsi.

Has the rust make this unrepairable due to the ruse near the suspension mounts?

Thanks.

Sadly, I would pass on that one, there is way too much rust there. If you wanted to sink a ton of money and time into it, it could be saved, but personally I would walk away.

From the looks of it the rear subframe looks to be in salvageable condition, but the gas tank looks rough (however I think that it has a dust shield over it and that's what is really rusted not the actual tank itself). The rear suspension bits look okay, and the subframe mounting points don't look too bad either. If you want the car and have to see it continue to live on you'll need to get under there and clear off all that rust and cost it with something like POR15.

The front looks on average, but I can spot there are some leaks from the oil pan and where your transfer case attached to the transmission that I would address if I were you.

Awesome thanks guys, yeah I am getting it for 3000, It is in minnesota, so it is expected up here.

I plan on stripping it down and addressing the rust and leaks from the motor and transfer case.

I'm from wisconsin and some rust is to be expected but for 3k I would look really closely at it and try to get him down a bit. You will need a pair of safey glasses and alota time with a wire wheel. I would be sure you don't have any cancer rust on the structural parts. Both mine coust me less and where less rusty just my .02

At first glance it looks pretty bad, but if you really study your photo the worst of it is on the gas tank shield (mentioned by GPLaserRS). You should be able to replace that with one from someone here on the board. The undercarriage can be wire-wheeled and coated. Someone mentioned POR15 above, I used that on the underside of my Starion during restoration. Stuff is awesome. Just use as directed.

All that said, I'd worry about the strut towers on a car that rusty underneath. They can be difficult to repair. I'd take a long hard at the towers. Google Image "dsm strut tower rust" if you don't know what I'm talking about all look at all the pics that pop up.

Imo it depends on your plans....If i purchased this car, id remove the rear subframe and wirewheel the entire underbody and coat it. This isnt in an acceptable state to start upgrading or even driving. The longer you wait the worse its gunna be. You basically have several small cavities....you dont want to wait and be forced to get a route canal. Most people just cut their losses and pull that bi*** out and start over.

IMHO you should pass. I wheeled the underside of a 69 Mustang from Minnesota but only because they are rare. DSMs aren't as rare, at least in Colorado Springs. I recently bought a 90 Talon for myself and 96 Eclipse for my wife in a short period of time. There's a lot of salt here in Colorado and some DSMs I examined looked as bad as your pics or worse. Owners didn't take care of them, while others do. I really lucked out on the 90 Talon because the previous owner had a body shop remove and repair some minor rust. Unless DSMs are hard to come by in your area, I'd pass.

I am looking for a project car, I really don't want a finished car. I am looking for something to take a few years to complete.

95-99 Talon Tsi's AWD/Eclipse Gsx seem to be in short supply, I am not really able to find one that is not "built" Already and asking 7-10k.

I also am not able to travel long distances to acquire a car.

I also have a donor 1999 eclipse RS for body panels to replace them with(no motor/trans).

I have no problem spending a lot of time on the car to save money and distance traveled to get the car. I was more curious if it is possible to salvage the rust without spending 1,000s of dollars. It will not be my daily driver, Time is not my concern.

EDIT*
I have 2500 dollars in my budget for rust removal, I guess do you guys think that will cover it?

Trust me when i say this....Take your time and look for something better. Its just not worth it. These cars arent that rare and are pretty cheap. That car will be FULL of surprises. Trust me.
