Depending on the amount of damage it will probably cost you more to repair/clean yours, than to just buy a new-to-you gas tank.
Going through the proper steps to ensure the rust is cleaned up and prevented from spreading is expensive and time consuming.

Take it to your local radiator shop. They will clean it, make sure its sealed, and put a protective coating in it. It wasn't very expensive, I want to say around $100 for me to have it done. I thought my tank was a gonner, but they took care of it. They even cleaned the fuel sending unit for me. I tried cleaning it myself at first but its just messy and I couldn't get the surface rust all out.

My mechanic cleaned an old gas tank from a 79 bike using vinegar and soaking it over the course of many days if you have the time to try it. Of course this gas tank was the size of an OJ bottle too.. :hmm:
