Alright so like the title said, the car won't start. Last night I was driving home normally like I always do, came up to a red light and began to downshift like normal. I would hear the occasional light popping sounds from the rear exhaust leak which didn't concern me at all. This time as I was downshifting I heard the same popping accompanied by a louder pop which almost sounded as though it was coming from the middle or the front of the car. I get closer to the red light and that loud popping has happened twice now until I begin to come to a stop; before I stop the warning lights turn on and the car dies, I turned the key off immediately, held the brake and engaged the parking brake, vehicle in neutral. Trying to restart it now, clutch to the floor all I hear is a whirring sound and nothing else. Did this a couple times with no luck, had to get it towed. So at the house I get curious and pull off the timing cover, no slack belt appears undamaged, no debris anywhere that I can see. Slave cylinder appears to be engaging just fine, moves when I push the clutch. When I put the vehicle in gear and try to start it, it lugs a little bit in first with the whirring sound, 2nd sounds a little higher and faster, 3rd is fastest but still no start, just the whirring sound. Clutch pedal feels like it is weaker than before, less pressure/resistance I'm at a complete loss, and I'm new to DSM; hopefully someone on here has an inkling of what might be the issue.

I've tried in gear, and in neutral while holding in the clutch.
None of that should matter. Did you check mechanical timing? Evem if belt isn't broken teeth can be stripped off. Almost sounds like you'e spinning the motor over with no compression. Your description is a little vague

I'm not entirely certain how to check the timing on it. But I did notice teeth missing on the timing belt. I tried cranking with the timing cover off, the belt didnt budge an inch, just made a spinning sound and made the lights dim. As I stated before, I'm lost on all this.

That’s bad news I would say the belt is destroyed. It can look taut still because there’s really no space for the belt to come off inside the timing cover. Likely bent valves which means cylinder head removal. The popping you heard may have meant the belt had jumped a little already and then just gave out when you came to the light.
If you would like to know how to repair it or learn the basics there is vfaq, and plenty of tech articles here.

At a bare minimum you have a broken belt. Very likely you have bent valves which will require a cylinder head at minimum.

Yep, heads gonna need to come off for valves to be replaced. I just had to do this on my 98. Belt failure is due to lack of maintenance. Must have been an old belt to shave it's teeth off. Mine was due to a balancer coming apart and digging into the belt. You will want to to a timing belt and water pump kit and a head set (meaning all the gaskets and seals for the top end). With these two kits you will have everything you need to go back together, plus what the machine shop finds is needed for the head. In my case it was two vales. Everything else was fine. Have a valve job done on them all, replace valve seals, (they will come in the head set), and have the surface decked. Looking at about $200 for that on average. Around $120 for the timing/wp kit, and $50 for the head set if you get them online. Get the head set so you can send the valve seals with the head when you take it in.

Or you can do what I did and re-time the engine first and see if you get lucky.. I didn't. Found a dead cyl after getting timing back on. Might not want to waste the time because it's very likely valves are damaged. But it's possible to time it and go. I've seen it before.

Jeez, well; thank you, all of you for the insight. Wish the news was better but them's the breaks. Guess it's time to crack out the tools.

you could try this but as many time you spun the engine over it is very likely bent valves like i stated in my first post--but hey u never know till u try

Definitely agree, just something he can try if he has the time. After it's timed, if it doesn't work, with all things left apart, he is only one step of removing the belt away from continuing onto removing the head. When I did this, I left all covers and accessories off and just started the car. Then when I found no compression on cyl 2, I simply took the belt back off and then went after the head. Basically everything you go after to do timing will be needed to be done to replace the head anyway. It just takes you closer.

Just make sure to do it right, and don't cheap out on parts, otherwise you will find yourself doing this again. I'd recommend Mitsuboshi belts, and GMB pulleys and water pump. Kits are available through Amazon etc. I don't trust Gates or continental for my timing. They seem to be popular choices for DSMers. Maybe that's why timing problems are so prevalent on these engines.. The head set ins't as big a deal. But get one that comes with new head bolts.

Gates belts for the last 10 years. Cheap chinese pullets? No way. Look at the markings. Ntn, nsk bearings.
Next round im likely going oem. Too many parts stores have only chinese crap. Even if its brand name like gates.
