I recently purchased an EVO3 Intake manifold and have been looking at my options for 60mm throttle bodies. There is the venerable 1g turbo throttle body, but I'd prefer to go in a different direction.

I've been studying the throttle body from an EVOIV RS. Everybody knows that with the EVOIV they mirrored the engine so the throttle plate points towards the left side of the car. With a left hand drive car in this configuration, the plate would move in the opposite direction to the throttle plate on a 2G DSM.

The EVOIV is, obviously, right hand drive, and most crucially, where DSM/EVOI,II,III/USDM Evos have the throttle cable and actuator on the firewall side of the throttle body and the TPS on the front, the later JDM Evos (IV-IX) have it facing towards the front of the car and the TPS towards the firewall. This means that when you flip it around to bolt it to an EVOIII intake manifold, it puts the throttle actuator/cable on the firewall side and the TPS on the front just like we have it.

On a right hand drive EVOIII this wouldn't work, but when placed into a left hand drive car with the throttle cable pulling from the left side of the car, it'll open correctly. When the EVOIV throttle body is flipped around, the TPS even points towards the left side of the car like on a 2gT.

The only real hang-up that I can see is that, when mounted to an EVOIII intake, the Fast Idle Air Valve coolant ports are pointed towards the firewall, instead of towards the front of the car.

You could just run some new hoses and I'm sure they'd work fine, but I have a better answer. When searching for the gasket the EVOIV FIAV housing uses to mount to the throttle body, I discovered that it is the same part number as the gasket for a 97+ 2g 4G64 Sypder. In fact, a great many components are shared between the 54mm 97+ Spyder throttle body and the EVOIV. I don't have a 4G64 FIAV to compare, but after looking at pictures, it's the same shape, and bolt locations, with the only difference being the coolant lines point towards the front of the car like a 2gT so in theory a 97+ 4G64 FIAV housing should bolt onto an EvoIV throttle body.

The EVOIV TPS is the same part number as the four wire 2G Spyder TPS, and has the same ECU pinouts/wire order as a 2gT so this should work fine. I am unsure of whether a 97+ Spyder IAC would work in a 2gT as while it uses the same pins at the ECU, they are labeled differently and the wire order is different. The EVOIV IAC, on the other hand, uses the same ECU pins/wire order as a 2gT DSM, and it also seems that the EVOVIII/3GEclipse IACs are bolt in replacements for the EVOIV IAC, sharing the same ECU pinouts and wireorder.

So.... what is the benefit of using this throttle body vs. one that just fits without any f***ery?

None really. 1G DSM all the way if you just want something to work with minimal effort; I was just documenting this as another option. In my case, I was given an Evo4 throttlebody and wanted to see if I could make it work. Turns out, I likely can.

While I'm here: I was wrong in my original post. An EVO3 throttle body would work as well. Contrary to what I was told, the Evo3 uses a convoluted throttle cable that runs around the front side of the plenum and back around behind it from the left side so it should have no actuation problems on a left hand drive car. An Evo3 throttle body would be even easier, because the FIAV housing can be used as is.

There's a thread floating around here where a guy uses a b series skunk2 intake manifold on his 4g63.

Anything will fit anything. But that's not the point, there is a cost to benefit analysis to every modification made. With few of these cars left in the junk yard, even a spyder throttle body assembly will be hard to find. To try to find one with a working tps and iac, still hard. Trying to find an evo3 th, damn near impossible.

But do whatever you want, im sure with enough tuning and work it will work

Or you could close out the FIAV and cap the lines and not worry about getting new hoses.

Yup, but I'd prefer to maintain the fast idle and idle air capability.

Oh, absolutely, but I guess it depends on where you derive your enjoyment. Some people get the majority of their enjoyment from the end result so it makes sense to minimize effort to get there. I find hunting down obscure things, and piecing together esoteric information entertaining, so my cost-benefit may be different than most.

In any case, I didn't expect this post to herald a paradigm shift in DSM tuning, but I wanted the results of my research out there for future searchers.

I like the evo 4 body as it flows slightly more than DSM NT or evo 3. But I mainly swapped to it because its actually about 3/4lb lighter!

I didn't actually weigh them to compare so I didn't want to speak without confirmation, but having just had my 2GT throttle body off the car, the EVOIV definitely felt noticeably lighter in my hands. Coupled with the lighter Evo3 manifold, it should result in a nice little weight reduction. After I track down a 4G64 Spyder FIAV (the Standard aftermarket FIAV solution is too pricey for something I'm trying on a lark), I'll weigh both the 2gT and IV throttle bodies and post the results. What'd you do with the FIAV? Just blocked it off?

As an aside, there's an Evo1 running around in Tampa? How cool is that!

With my eBay Evo4 FIAV, I will just remove the stock FIAV tubes and tap the holes for some threaded hose barbs to use. Those are all over eBay for dirt cheap compared to an OEM Mitsu housing. If the cheap ISC doesn’t work, a quality OEM piece still fits right in.

Another viable option I hadn't thought of. Thanks.

Reviving this thread in hopes of a solution to a problem I'm currently facing.

Im in the final stretches of my 4G63t build, but my 4G64 needs to last a little bit longer and my ISC has been acting up lately. A replacement ISC/FIAV housing for my 99 4G64 SOHC retails for around $170, I don't want to spend that kind of money on something I'll be pulling out of the car shortly. Per this thread, the Evo IX FIAV housing shares the same dimensions as the 99 FIAV, but I can find them as cheap as $35. The only difference I'm understanding from this thread is that the pinout on the ISC is slightly different.

I don't mind swapping a few wires if it means saving $130. Does anyone know if this is true, or am I misunderstanding something here??

On a side note, and actually how I found this thread to begin with, I have two 2G 4G63t throttle bodies I could swap in as well.. just don't know if it can be done and what wiring changes need to be made. Either way, I need to figure out a solution to the ridiculously overpriced FIAV for the 99 Spyder GS.
