Does anyone know of a vendor or a company that makes Electric Steering Racks for the DSM 1G?

I am looking to eliminate the hydraulic rack completely, no PS Pump, no PS Reservoir, and more efficient.

The application is for a road course race car, not street or drag.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks,

Meech

Look into a Toyota mr2 electric pump. It's a common mod. Personally I have a converted rack I love. Im not a welder so I sent an old rack to Eaton Motor works and Brandon converted it for $80 (commonly called the flyin miata mod). I would highly recommend it. The only time it's a PITA is in parking lots or pulling into my garage but the difference in handling is night and day and totally worth it.

Brandon at eaton no longer does the mod for 80 bucks, he told me it takes too long and he loses money so he charges his rate per hour depending how long it takes. Comes out to more then 80 I can tell you that much LOL...

This doesn't make sense to me. If you have a properly powered rack why is it a PITA in parking lots? It should be easy to turn at low speeds. Am I missing something here?

It's a power rack converted to a manual rack (based on the flyin miata mod).. Removed /sealed power lines, removed the center seal out of the rack (makes turning easier) and welded pinion gears (makes so there's 0 play between the pinion gears, so it's essentially 1 piece)

You don't need a shop to do it though, it's really easy, just following the directions. Mines still in pieces until I get my welded back up and running...

Well I'm glad I got mine when I did then! Personally I'm not a welder so for the price it was worth it, ntm I had an old rack lying around.
But yeah it's unbelievably responsive and a joy to drive until I'm pulling into the severe angle of my garage entrance, but you get the hang of it pretty quick. I was DDing that car for years too. Made my non converted DSM feel like driving a school bus in comparison.

That trip into the driveway is how you get your daily upper body workout anyway, right?

Hell yes! Since I don't DD that car anymore and I stopped going to the gym when I do drive her I get a nice pump within 30 seconds LOL

It should also be noted that a converted power rack maintains the same shorter turn ratio. Many people actually prefer this over a true manual rack, which is available for 1g DSMs. Once in a while you can find a manual rack on rock auto or in parts stores.
