I have a 1999 Dodge Avenger. It shares tons and tons of parts with a 2g Eclipse/ Talon.
Just wanted to stop by and tell you guys that I was able to swap in the 6g75 3.8L V6 from a 04 Galant and get it to run on the factory ECU. I also was able to install an OBX LSD in the a604 automatic and traction is great. I know that you guys love your turbos but if anyone wanted to drop in the big V6 into their DSM I would be glad to help. Car runs and drives great. The drive train will literally drop into your cars. Just need the ECU and wiring harness and a few fabbed parts and tapped sensors.

For what it's worth I consider my Avenger a DSM. Has a Mitsubishi sticker on the firewall and everything.

Take care.

Eh the car is definitely not my daily, i've owned it since 2002 and its literally taught me everything i know about cars. Welding, metal fab, electrical, wiring, tranny rebuilding, problem solving...etc... Its my ITT tech LOL. But over the years also gave me the confidence to work on my SRT10 Ram and my Viper. Its still a fun car to drive. In the last 10 years or so Ive probably driven the Avenger less than 2,000 miles. Buts alright. Been a perpetual project.
Thanks for the response.

How are you getting our stock 4cyl ecu to run a 6cyl car engine? the injector and ignition drivers dont exist.

That's awesome! I'm interested in the amount of fabrication that was involved with this project.

Here is my project log on www.aseclub.net

I actually have another project log from when I converted the car to an a543 5-speed transmission. Since though i have gone back to the a604 auto. Already have 3 manual transmission vehicles so i figured having an auto wouldn't hurt.

Yes the car came with a 2.5L V6. Found the 2nd car for $500. Cheap really to have all the electronics and the tranny etc... Only the timing was off is why it wouldn't run.

OK well instead of going through pages and pages of build thread, here is the synopsis.

Ideally start with a wrecked or blown motor/tranny Avenger/Sebring with the 2.5L v6. I found one for $500 that the timing belt skipped a few teeth. Set the timing and ran great.

Pull the entire engine/transmission/body harness.
Buy a 6g75 from a scrap yard.
Remove all 420a stuff from your car. Everything.
Axles/hubs and suspension are the same. I think the springs might be different but you'll have those if you get a donor car anyway.
For all intents and purposes you are going to swap everything possible from the Avenger/Sebring into your Eclipse/Talon
The 3.8L requires very little to work. The plenum will need to be tapped for the 2.5L MAP and AIT sensors.
The 2.5L throttle body will bolt to the 3.8L plenum- although it is small. I went with a TB from a 2003 Diamante with a 3.5L. Cut the ends off the throttle body shafts- weld the 2.5L end onto the 3.5L shaft. Then I fabbed a bracket on the TPS housing so that I could use the stock TPS. There is a member on ASECLUB that has some spare IAC blocks that bolt right to the 3.5L TB so you can use the stock IAC sensor.
Believe it or not the distributor from the 2.5L will bolt onto the 3.8L rear head with zero modification.
The coolant crossover pipe will have to have a radiator cap/housing welded on so you can fill the coolant system.
Stock 2.5L exhaust manifolds will bolt to the heads, up to you if you want to get headers. I made some Longtube headers for mine. Sounds sick!
The power steering pump bracket needs minimal fabrication to bolt to the heads.
Alternator and brakets bolt right on
A/C bracket needs to be spaced out approx 1" from the block to clear the oil filter housing. Will need a pipe thread T fitting to use the stock Oil pressure and oil temperature sensors.
Coolant sensors are the same.
I welded new O2 sensor bungs on the headers.
The engine bolts right to the a604 automatic. I had mine rebuilt by a local shop. I also installed an OBX LSD from www.turbosunleashed.com. Had to have a sleeve on the LSD machined down so the stock a604 drivers side race could be pressed on. And also had to have a 12mm spacer made that goes in-between the ring gear and the diff to use the a604 ring gear. Longer bolts grade 12.9 hardness are also required. 40mm, m12, 1.00mm thread pitch. I also shaved the inside of the diff case slightly so that the bolt heads would clear.
You can use the stock returnless fuel system if you want. I have an Aeromotive rising rate FPR and a return with a walbro 255 pump...very easy to adjust fuel pressure whenever I want.
All the stock gauges will work.
I am sure there are some other details, but it is a relatively simple swap (now that i have done literally all the work and R&D).
Also have to fab a cowl on your hood or cut a hole as the plenum is quite tall.
Throttle cable will require some adjustments as well.

I have always been one to do different stuff to my vehicles. A 3.8L V6 2g Eclipse or Talon would be really cool.

What kinda power/torque are you talking about with that engine? It sounds cool, but if this is for 420a cars, it seems like a sirius II 4g63 swap would be easier. And those can make 300+ whp on a evo turbo... And used evo turbos are usually pretty cheap.

Absolutely a 4g63 will make more power. This is just a different swap is all. My car made 231whp and 277tq on the dyno some years ago with a manual transmission. Only mods were headers/exhaust and a tune. Sounds good and looks good. Easy swaps aren't necessarily better. For example I am in the beginning stages of building a 1969 Boss 429 Mustang Clone. Its all about the journey IMO. Not easy! But fun!

I guess I enjoy the finished product more than the building. Not that I mind the building.

I like the innovation, just not sure the cost/benefit is there when you factor time as cost.

Yup to each their own. Id never mod a 4 banger IMO.

Well there are alot more single digit 4 "bangers" then thre are 6 "bangers" out there, so I wouldnt let the number of cylinders deter you from building one, the 4g63 has done pretty well for itself in the racing world over the past 30 or so years.

Oh yeah absolutely I know they can be fast. My friend Matt has a 9 second 98 Eclipse GSX that runs low 9s. Another buddy has a 6 second rotary car. Everyone has different preferences. I just like big displacement and huge low end torque. I'm starting a 1969 Boss 429 clone project right now with a 460 stroked to 600 cubic inches. I had a 99 GSX 5 speed with only 60k miles a couple years ago too. Just couldn't get excited about it.

I would have listed my stable of cars in my sig but it wouldn't let me.

How come you didn't use the manual from the 3G? There's a member who did the Evo 4G63 swap into a 420A 2G using the 3G trans.

To use the 3g Eclipse transmission a large portion of the driver side frame must be removed. The frame on the Avenger is significantly narrower than a 3g Eclipse. Not worth the safety concern to use that transmission. Also, would have to use different spindles as the axles are different. The a543 uses the same exact axles. Just depends on what you are wanting to do really. Both are possible.
