I'm getting a evo 3 trans for the gearing but am unsure exactly what parts I need to swap. I've been reading I can just change the front differential from my stock trans to the evo 3 trans and run the evo trans in my 95 gsx, it said I just need to change the front diff gears. I've read I need to change or machine the stock intermediate shaft. My question is, what is the easiest way to run a evo 3 trans setup on a dsm platform? I don't have the evo transfer case or rear diff and I want to utilize as many parts from the evo trans as I can. Do I change the evo shafts into my dsm trans or do I put my dsm front diff in the evo trans?

Will do. It should be here any day now.

Wait, what? If I don't want evo gearing? I do want the evo gearing...

buz, evo gearing is 3.9 ratio final vs 3.54 dsm. the higher final drive is what makes it special. it would be my advice to source a 3.9 final ring and pinion for your rear end.

What he said^^^
Make sure you have the matching transfer case, too. Some people will call an Evo 1 or 2 transmission an Evo 3 transmission, but there are some differences, and the transfer case required depends on the number of teeth on the diff crown wheel. When you get it, tell us the W5M33-W*** number, and we can help.

Well it's here and the bell housing is cracked and repaired where the vin is and it's illegible. I'm going to take it apart tonight and post pictures, hopefully we can identify it from the pics. I have a good spare 95 trans here for parts.

Can't make out what that says either. My luck... if it can it will

I'm in a similar situation here and I need some advice what to do next. I have an EVO 3 RS trans in mint condition (W5M332UPFETJ8313), and I have my 95 talon trans (KW5M332NPZT) and a matching tcase. Originally my rear diff was an open one and I have bought an EVO 9 RS rear diff insert some time ago and got it swapped in yesterday (by the threads I have read this should be a plug and play with the oem rear drive shafts). So my stock setup had an open front and rear diff and my new setup has front EVO 3 RS lsd and rear EVO 9 RS lsd. My next step was to swap the front diff ring gear and pinion output shaft with bearings and races and use the stock tcase as I also have the stock gearing at the back. Now is this a good plan? Can I use the stock front drive shafts with this trans (having the front lsd)? What are the benefits of having the EVO diff ring gear and would it be worth it to try buying an EVO 3 transfer case and also the rear end gearing? Getting a whole EVO rear diff would mean changing the rear drive shafts also?

Some pictures attached.

Advices please :)

You can't put any ring gear other than the Evo ring gear on the front viscous LSD. You also need the matching right side axle joint or it will pop out of the transmission.

Basically you need full Evo-3 spec gearing (3.909 rear ring gear and matching transfer case) to use the front LSD. Your choice.

What would be your advice? Is the front evo lsd worth the hassle? (I still got the evo 9 rs rear lsd) Would I be better off just swapping in the open diff from the eclipse trans and using the eclipse tcase and rear ring gear? Would this work?

What would it mean (in driving) to use the EVO 3 transmission with the eclipse final drive? I would have lower acceleration but longer gears?

Thanks

I really don't think the viscous front LSD is worth the hassle if you don't have all the parts. If you had the axle stub, and the matching rear gears, sure. That axle can be a bastard to find, and can be very expensive (a new joint from Mitsubishi is $400)
The viscous LSD can wear out, and become useless anyway. It might not be any more effective than an open differential if it's seen a lot of usage.
My advice - if you don't care about traction in the front, and/or don't want to go to the shorter Evo final drive (quicker acceleration, lower top speed), then the Eclipse open differential will swap into the Evo transmission. No other changes necessary. If you're concerned about front tire traction, take the money you would spend on the 3.909 rear gears and the axle stub, and buy an aftermarket front LSD (I suggest Cusco RS). You can put the DSM ring gear on that, and use the stock axles. It drops right in.

For a car with 500whp, you might want the Eclipse final drive anyway. The Evo final drive is a lot of fun when combined with the Evo's transmission gear ratios, but frequently big-power Evo owners will swap to the 3.545 Eclipse final drive to get more speed out of each gear.

You have answered every single question and concern I had even before I asked it! Thank you very much!

I have used four different front LSD and my opinion is the evo one is by far the best one. works the best and doesnt require any special oil because it doesnt share oil with trans. Its worth the effort as an enthusiast after best results from modifications. I have used stock usa inner instead of the factory long evo inner shaft. I devised a nice way to keep shaft in. but I think the harder part of swap is finding machine shop to machine your usa ring gear to fit on the larger flange evo diff.

Well my main goal is to keep the 3.545 ratio so I guess I will be able to live without the front lsd for now. Good aftermarket lsds can be adjusted to whatever suits you best so that shouldn't be an issue.
