I've seen @JusMX141 recommend the FP red over the black time and time again. The jist of the message is - why would you pay for a black when the red can do just about everything the black can do, and do it spooling significantly faster?

51lb/min @ 27-28psi with full boost at 4800 from the Black isn't too impressive to me...I'd go for the Red. If your power goal demands more than the Red can deliver, it's time to abandon the DSM-flanged turbos and go T3.

i went with the red... basically for the same reasons 19gsx91 was talking about... seems like it could give me decent power with quicker spool up

There was a discussion about this on the dsm tech Facebook group on Tuesday. Basically, the black will make more power if that's what you're after. However, it will spool later. That's really all there is to it. It just depends on whether you prefer the spool or the hp. A tuner claimed he has made 600hp and flowed 70+ lbs/min on a black but still prefers the red. It's funny that people don't ever think to call FP to get advice about their turbos. Everyone goes to internet where you will get the worst advice. BTW, I'm not bashing the OP at all, just pointing out a fun fact :)

I have the fp 68hta right now. It's nice but want something more. I want a good Street car but want to do highway pulls
Might go with the xona 78-64 not sure yet

So is DSM flange a very limiting factor in terms of power or spool? trying to keep FP manifold and not spend money on tubular or any other style-work with whatever I have? Anybody trapped 135+ on RED LOL?

I called FP gave them all the specs on my car and my HP goals and they recommended the black. That's what I have on mine. I am very happy with it. Call FP and see what they have to say.

I was asking you.. and your profile doesn't mention your boost level, thus the question.
:dsm:
I start building around 3800 and reach full boost at 4800. On my dyno run we ran 30psi I have run as much as 37psi with it. I redline at 8000rpm and have 0 issues with that turbo holding 37psi to that.

An FP red is rated to flow at 61lbs and the black is rated at 71lbs so it's not a small difference between the two. The 68HTA is rated at 51lbs so that kinda gives you an idea of the jump from red and black.

My v1 68hta starts to spool around 2800 and I hit full (28) boost around 3800rpm That black has to hit like a freight train.. but spooling so late would ruin it on the street for me.

strange though.. my v2 68hta I wouldn't see full boost until 4300-4400rpm.. going from THAT to a red or black would definitely be noticeable without a large loss in spool

It seems to me that at the point I'd want the black, I'd be willing to spend the dime go to a twin scroll setup.

Subbed, because I'm somewhat in the dilemma, but with the red vs green in my case. I originally wanted an hta68, but I'm completely turned off on the v2 results. On the e316g now with a 2.3 7-bolt.

Joe Bucci had great results with his stroker v2 hta68 setup. Something like 500hp with a ton of torque.

The cool thing, to me, about the FP turbos is the tradition and history of their products with dsms. Everyone ran them back in the day and a lot of people still run them now considering they're the only ones in the game. Are they perfect? No. If you're looking for something in then 4-550hp range then is it really worth it to spend double for the t3 setup? Anyways, just ranting. I'll leave now.

Nah you're both right.. Brett (GST with PSI) and I both thrashed our v2 68htas pretty hard respectively, both of us saw similar performance numbers but both of us weren't fans of the initial spool up or transient response (in between shifts) In my case once the boost was turned up past 25 it was much better, but still lacking.

He moved on to a 3052 setup and loves it, and I went to a v168hta that I also really, really like.. but I'm moving onto an hx35/40 hybrid in a bep housing.. I'll see how that works out.

t3 setups cost so much because of the manifold. $200 for a cast FP or 900+ for a quality t3 mani

No one knocked FP at all, no need to rant/defend them. I love FP. The complaint on the v2 hta68 is absolutely still valid. Its great turbo but it is an entirely different experience when compared to v1.

The twin-scroll reference was made with regard to a wider powerband. I think at the point where you're considering an FP black, dropping the coin on a twin-scroll setup might definitely be worth it for the wider powerband.

The HX35s are great, but you can't deny the simplicity of the FP30 or bolt-on setups. (that xona setup sure looks awesome but $$$)

Regardless, keep us posted. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the comparison after the switch.

I have the Black on my Auto car and it is at full boost at 4500. I'm on e85 built 2.0. The HP out shines the spool up for me at less. I will just add no2 LOL to make up the differance!!!

If for nothing other than helping it stall up. Car sounds sick. I'm here for motivation, and you guys never disappoint.
