i came across an evo III diff when a shop closed down a while back here in phx. a buddy was trying to install it into his 2g AWD (rear end i believe), but didnt work out... him and a local dsm expert said that it would fit in a 2g fwd, and act the same as a KAAZ LSD... i paid about $325 for the thing, but im not seeing anything on whether it works or not. my trans is being cracked open this week... i want to be confident it will work! does anyone have feedback? i searched the forums and the topic was only brought up once back in 2011 and the guy said he was only 90% sure it would work..

Got a picture of it? Should install fine, but you need the matching spline count on the axles.

Edit: wait, are you trying to put a rear diff in the transmission? Not happening.

i can send a pic later today. i believe that they were trying to install a front diff on a rear end... and realized it didnt work, thus selling it to me. thank you for your reply!

Ah, the ubiquitous front viscous LSD. It doesn't need just any AWD DSM axle - the passenger's side has to be the specific LSD axle cup from the Evo 1/2/3 or it's going to pop out. It also needs the ring gear that came with it - which is a lot shorter than the DSM gearing (some like it, some don't). Both of these things can be extremely hard to find if you don't have them.

Check that the bolt pattern is the same first, I'm pretty sure it's not.

im sorry, which bolt pattern should i be checking? i do have the 64t ring gear, the pics uploaded incorrectly (as you can tell i double posted the same ones) if that is the one you are referring to.

I'm fairly certain the spacing between the bolts is different on a viscous crown wheel compared to non-viscous. So, even if you machined down the inner ring, you would still need to drill new bolt holes. See picture, but measure for yourself.

hahaha ok so what if i just got a whole new crown wheel machined to accept a 55t ring gear in the correct bolt pattern?! slap it in and call it a day? i have a buddy who does that kind of work for a living, might get the homie hookup!

You could certainly modify your stock DSM crown wheel, and if your friend is willing to do it for free, great, but it's a big job. A better LSD is what - $900? Your costs to machine a crown wheel and find the axle stub could get pretty close to that.

the bolt pattern is different. requires elongating the holes on dsm crown. pics have been posted before of what it looks like after its done. I will be doing this for my a/t summit project. its a great diff for auto since the clutch pack is sealed and requires no special fluid.

man you guys are awesome. thanks for the information. so, the good news is that there is a 2g in town that has a trashed evo3 trans in it...

you would want to use the evo 3 trans and rebuild it. if its not too trashed. there are other issues putting the evo 3 diff in the 2g fwd trans. I think I may be the only person on this earth that is aware of the following issues. there would be the axle issue. if you got the evo diff in the 2g trans you would have to use AWD 2g axles. the other issue is the diff itself may be too wide to get into the trans. my memory is foggy on this but pretty sure years ago I put a jdm 2g diff into a 2g awd trans (front diff same as 1G). the 2g diff was about .100 narrow. had to make shims to make it fit. you are going the opposite way. 1g diff into 2g fwd trans. not gonna be easy to remove .100.

axles arent an issue, i have access to bins full of parts (i found a set of legit "G" cams in one of those bins) the evo trans is no good unfortunately. cracked down the middle. i understand what you mean by the diff size.

i think being able to put awd axles on a fwd would be a bonus, wouldnt it be? ELHS mod??
