Ok I'm finally ready to install the 14b and a few other mods on my 95, TSI Auto after spending a slough of money spent on maintanence. The car is currently stock aside from a manual boost controller, and exhaust. My question for you guys is do I save myself the hassle and let a shop install the 14b along with my other mods I have sitting here, or do I attempt to do it myself. Keep in mind I am a complete newb, and my mechanical skills VERY basic 1/10 . I have the extreme PSI 14b install kit, as well as a 1g BOV, Injen Intake, Open dump 02 pipe, and punishment racing SMIC pipping kit. I know this is a DIY community and I'm sure I could handle the intercooler piping and intake...but the Turbo might be a little out of my league. Also am I missing anything that You more experienced fellas would add on this build? I'm trying to keep this build as reliable and cheap as possible. I'm shooting for 15psi and 250whp on this set up, (Walbro 190 @ wide and are on order). Let me me know what you think guys, I want to get this bad boy in the road :)

Thank you

Here are some how-to's you can review and judge for yourself:

This job can be done with basic hand tools, but can be a bit easier with a pneumatic impact. You may also want to consider:

  • PB Blaster
  • Anti-sieze
  • Torque wrench
  • Blue painter's tape
  • Sharpe
  • Zip-Loc bags
  • BLT tester
  • Jack and jack stands
The tape and marker are to note what/where you disconnect hoses electrical connectors. Tape both sides w/writing for easy assembly. If you are not sure what the connector/hose is, just number both sides the same, so you match them up upon assembly. Any items you remove, place any bolts/brackets in a Zip-Loc and write what it goes to on the bag.

As far as other items, you should not forget other items you will need such as:

  • Motor oil and filter
  • Coolant
  • Replacement seals/gaskets on any items removed.
  • Turbo feed line w/ restrictor
  • Beer

Don't forget to add new turbo to manifold bolts because if that's a stock car with stock bolts that haven't been removed. I can 90% guarantee they'll break

Agree with this. Also, add new conical washers. Use OEM and not the ARP turbo to manifold bolts as a lot of people have bad luck with them breaking. Of course you know to add new gaskets for the turbo and o2 housing. I would add a fuel pump rewire kit as well. If you can afford it ecmlink and some evo 560cc injectors would get you to your goals.

That was the first little build on my Talon. Was very fun with the 14b and evo injectors.

you doing it yourself would be the best that way you get to know the car...that way in the future if you go to upgrade the turbo again you know what parts need removed and how to remove them or if they just need pushed to the side or even just to know what parts are where and how to remove them.

The best advice would be to listen to yourself. Too many people "think" they can work on cars and then DSM's get a bad wrap for being hacked up. (because they are due to their owners)

Do you have any interest in turning wrenches? Mind getting dirt under your finger nails? Mind spending hours in the garage working on something, taking your time to do things right, and willing to spend the money to make sure its right?

If you answered no to any of these, pay a mechanic to do it. :thumb:

i made a list of things i needed for my 16g swap. A lot of the same items will be needed for your swap. I am not familiar with the punishment system, but it probably has most of them.

List is here.

As far as doing it yourself, it isn't horribly difficult, it jsut takes time and patience. I don't think i would pay to have the intake or wideband installed because those are quite simple. Maybe start there and see how it goes? Both could be installed without installing the turbo.
